I have to say I agree with many of the posts on this thread. Over the past 6 months the email communication standards between Aussie organizations has been awful.

1. Lack of replies
2. Copy and paste answers to my questions where the answer is for a totally unrelated question.
3. A company posting a huge packet of brochures to me when I was only enquiring for one particular service - and the brochure for the service I requested wasn't even enclosed in the package!
4. University enrolment department sending me emails that were littered with spelling mistakes, or so grammatically flawed that I had to phone them to understand what they were trying to say.

Makes me wonder what we're in for when we arrive in Brisbane in the middle of the summer :-)

Do this mean the conscientious Brit has good opportunities there, or do they finally succumb to the local ways???

Dear Bushcat,

Thank you for raising these issues. They are important to us. We will forward you a copy of "The Beatiful Ilands of Quensland" which we hope will cover all of your questions. Enjoy.

Heh Bushcat....I shall also add two things to support your experience...at times, I got a reply back! However, I got a reply to only 1 question out of the 3. LOL. I was going to reply back with ..."Hello!!! I asked 3 questions please!?" But then I changed my mind. Maybe the person was tired typing :p

Ohhh....and then one day I called ATO (Australian Taxation Office). I said to myself....OK, some don't like emails, so let me call. I swear to God, this guy could not understand my name. I had to spell it 10 times. Then he said, OK lets use the NATO phonetic alphabet (alpha, tango etc). No kidding, it went on for 10 minutes just to communicate my name. Hahaha, so I guess calling them would be stressful too. Finally, I got my answer ;)

OK, I am not criticizing here, because I think that wherever you go or call this might happen to you. I'm sure that we are gonna receive professional replies and calls once there. :p

Its where we chose to live so it mustn't that bad! :D

Cheers

If only the correspondence was that little erroneous. I would expect such an email if my enquiry was relating to somewhere like Mt. Isa.

I called a company this morning (4pm Brisbane time) to speak to someone, and was told the department I needed had closed for the day. I asked them what time they closed and the lady said 5pm, “but they’ve probably gone home early, the normally go home about 4”.

Oh well….. better stop winging… after all it is the promissed land.

Is it that they receive lots of spam? Maybe they are very busy!? Maybe they consider email as a poor communication medium and don't trust it? Maybe they were bitten and are now shy? Don't know...I have always been nice in emails and give lots of info about who I am.

I feel that most of them don't care about forming a healthy relationship with new clients...its like they only care about the bird in their hands! They don't think about the future.

But I tell ye, when in OZ, I won't even bother going to their shop or office or call! They don't deserve my money.

Hopefully, I'll get a different view once there.....and yes, I got a few replies back!

 You (well us anyway) ring up who we want, make an appointment and they turn up and do the job, it's not complicated.

Complicated?
Well in 'my experience' when we have tried contacting tradies and have left messages we've had no reply numerous times and some who have said they will call back don't either.
When we were having our pool built they wouldn't turn up when they were supposed to, wouldn't hear from them and so on. I have heard that other people have had the same problem too.

I have had similar experiences which is why when I find a good sparky/plumber/whatever I tend to be extra nice to them ... shouldn't have to but seems to be the way of it ... maybe they are too busy hooning around in the utes to bother to actually turn up ...

OK, not had any issues like that. In fact our pool people turned up a week early to start, and finished about two weeks earlier than the date mentioned at the beginning.
