I'm a bit staggered/amused/confused by this thread.
My first post on BE was asking if our family could live a comfortable life on $85k, and I was slagged off by many for showing off because most people earned far less than that.
And now I find we need $150k-$200k.
Costs must REALLY have gone up in the last year!

Noone is saying you can't live on less than that. In fact most people don't earn anything like that in the Uk or Aus.

It's when someone asks what they have to earn in $$$$ to match a similar earning in the UK that things change. If you enjoy a high income in the UK, you can't really expect to come to Australia and earn an average wage and still spend the same - your gonna have to make sacrifices.
(people seem to have high expectations of life in Australia and many look to have a nice house with a pool - though they didn't have a pool in the uk!)

I purely put in that information to show that we were living in a nice area, even on very little money!

no... of course not, but if you want to live a similarly 'well off' life style, like you'd have in the UK, then yes, you'd need to be earning a comparable amount here in Australia.
Note: The average salary i the UK is something like £26k, so someone on £75k is doing pretty well.

If your UK salary is £26 then the average Australian salary would be about correct for you.

I'm going into full time study and won't have a pot to piss in. What is the average income for a full time student and what are the rates paid to male escorts?

Surely I cannot be the only person who earns less over here (joint income of £45k back in Scotland) and has a better quality of life??? I work part time and earn about $6k per annum, hubby earns about $65k per annum! We receive no help from Centrelink as only temp, and don't get the living away from home allowance either, yet we have a much better life here!!
We live in WA, in Halls Head, which is the most desirable location (outwith Perth suburbs) to live!

But from what I have heard about WA, I can understand you thinking like that.

Oh come on. Everyone knows they're putting the title deeds to houses in Brisbane inside boxes of British cereal now... Oh yes, and if the poms don't like it here, everyone knows what they can do. Australia has no spiders, no snakes, the wages are higher than anywhere in the World and when every Australian smiles, there are diamonds in their teeth.

Go for it mate... if you can come up with a shopping basket comparison between Tesco and Coles that people on this board agree with then you are a better man than I.
To say that is one of the most argumentative topics you can choose is an understatement.

You need to get the average hourly wage of both Aus and UK and work out exactly how many minutes/hours it takes to purchase certain goods.
If it takes an average waged person in UK less worked minutes to buy a tin of beans compared to an average waged person in Aus then you can say the beans are cheaper in UK because less work is needed to buy them.
It's the only way, forget exchange rates it'a all about earning power and how long you have to work for a particular product.

There's only one way to work this out and I'm surprised no one has sussed it out.
