Do we think thats gonna happen? Well I think in the short term then no it won't. In the longer term I think we will see some benifits as the competition increases. We are starting to see UK style moves in the credit card market.
Anyway, have emailed Tesco so just waiting for a response

Not sure how long it'll take but they've opened a new store in Malaysia already and the plans are there to take on the aus market! Bring it on! How did you find the self-service thing in tescos? You scan all your shopping then go to the self service till where you pay for it too, no checkout peeps needed! Much quicker.
Some department stores in Canberra have self service tills. Much faster.

Good point, service foods, eating in and taking out, does seem a rip off in the UK, when you consider that retail, and I assume wholesale food prices are similar. I dont see how the UK can claim higher property costs as a factor or wage costs for that matter, when it comes to the food industry. Especially if you compare say Liverpool, Birmingham or Manchester, to Sydney and Melbourne.
For the most part, on my recent visit I really did feel slightly ripped off evertime I purchased eating out food.

Even Branson had to take some terrific losses while establishing the Virgin Blue brand. But he was prepared to absorb those losses, because he knew that all he had to do was hang on long enough to witness the demise of Ansett.
We are starting to see UK style moves in the credit card market.
According to yesterday's episode of Beat the Bailiff, personal debt in the UK increases at the rate of £1 million every four minutes.
I don't want Australia ending up in the same boat.

Here we go again
1 Bedroom Apartment London
1 Bedroom Apartment Sydney
You sure we are being ripped off here ????
Check out the Big Mac index, this is the true indication purchasing-power parity Price of a Big Mac
I suppose it what we have to live with, it is a true statement of supply and demand if you dont pay the prices you dont get the goods, unfortunately you dont live in that country anymore, as I was told when I got here, when you get paid in dollars then this is what you pay for everything & the sooner you drop the " I wonder how much this is in pounds?" then I would say it wont bother you anymore.
Dont let it get to you, otherwise you may turn into one of those "Whinging Poms" and we wouldn't want that to happen would we

The point though is that when u see competition you start to see consumer benifits. I strongly suspect that anyone coming into Oz first time will get a knock at the door and be told to play the game with pricing or there lives will be made difficult. It needs a player who is big enough to say I don't care I'll play it fair

The only good thing I found with Morrisons is the big ones (i.e. not those taken over from Safeway and rebranded) sell Ausralian beef which is the best steaks I've found in any of the UK supermarkets plus I think it was close on the cheapest too.

In Central Sydney we regularly eat 300g steaks with mash and gravy for $5 washed down with a few beers.
