Wink welder

Hello Frewy here just trying to get to grips with this. I am a welder but applying on a skilled visa as my wife is a nurse. Trying to find out what I need to do in order to work as a welder in Perth when we get there?

Welcome to the forum.
My partner is a fabricator/plater/welder thingie.
We have just been granted a 457 visa, and are currently intending to apply for an ENS visa, which will be permanent as the 457 is just for 4 years at a time.
We have a job to go to, as we are being sponsored because other half is 45. There are apparently loads of jobs outside the Perth area where the mining is. I am lead to believe by Pauls workmates who live out there, that there is work for welders all over the place - the hardest part is to get the visa.

What are your ages?
If you want further info, please feel free to send me a pm and I will try to assist.
I have been reading this site for a while now and found out loads of info. If I had found this site earlier we would not have applied for the 457, but just gone for the permanent visa, even though it may have taken longer.
I think you may find your skills are on the shortage list - have a look at the DIMMA web site, loads of info there to help.

I am 45 but my wife is 40 which is why we chose her skills to apply on a 136 Skills Assessed Visa. I am just not sure what I will need to do to prove that I am welder so I can apply for jobs.
We are in the inital stages of our application and waiting to hear from the Nursing & Midwifery Council in Australia. Initially looked at using agent who advised us to apply on this visa. On looking at paperwork with thought we could save money and do it ourselves!
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi again.
I am not an expert on this sort of thing, perhaps someone will come along shortly to advise or say I am wrong.
but if you are applying with your wife being the main applicant, then the DIMMA are not interested in what you do for a living, as they will be assessing on her skills and not yours.
I am 46 and Paul is 45,. He is the main applicant and had to send all his qualification certificates and reference from past employers for the last 10 years. As for me, apart from my date of birth and sending my passport, no one has asked any questions about me, as I am not the main applicant.

As for a job when you get there - take as many references from past employers as you can, and any qualifications you have. They may be prepared to give you a trial run.

I think I saw somewhere on here, the link to the aussie job site/ or newspaper - perhaps you could try looking there.

We are heading for outside Perth, so I can always let you have our company sponsors address, in case you want to email them about any vacancies - just let me know.

If your wife is under 45 and is the main applicant then you should have few problems as she is a nurse.

Things get much more difficult when you reach 45. Then you will struggle unless you can get a company to sponsor you. Even then it is not straightforward.

One tip. Have a look at applying to the state nursing board for nurse registration first as if you are sponsored by an employer or a state you do not need to go through the ANMC at all. If you do need to go through the ANMC for points then you can do the much cheaper modified assessment.

Good luck

Loads of welder / boilermaker jobs here in Perth.

Dont know exactly what licences you need etc, but you could always contact some of the companies and ask the question directly http://www.yellowpages.com.au/search...erth&stateId=3

Or speak to some of the recruitment agencies - Steelweld Personnel in Belmont are one agency I know that specialise in supplying welders. Dont think they have a website but their fax number is +61 8 9479 4705. Perhaps you could send them a fax with your details and ask what else they would need from you.

other general agencies that nearly always have welding jobs are
www.seek.com.au
www.mycareer.com.au
www.careerone.com.au
www.ipa.com.au - this one has a place for non-australian applicants to register
www.talentinternational.com.au
www.choiceone.com.au
Am sure they would also be able to advise on what documentation you need to provide to employers.

Also have a look at the joboutlook website http://jobsearch.gov.au/joboutlook/d...&ASCOCode=4122 to get basic details about employment prospects. I've always found this site to be quite realistic, occasionally even a bit pessimistic, but plan for this though as a worst case scenario, (even though Perth because of the booming economy will be above this baseline) and then you get a nice surprise - hopefully - when you get here. Certainly the folk I speak to in Shipyards and mining companies are crying out for good boilermakers and any that are on the market are snapped up almost instantly.

Hi Frewy

My hubby, myself and three children arrived in victoria in August, we came in on skilled 136 visa as Kev is Welder. It make no difference who is the visa holder as to appliying for work, Kev just showed all references he had and college certs and apprenticeship papers which are very different to here, he has been welding 20 years.

We also found when going in agencies they like to see your visa in passport to check you can work here.

Basically Kev got a job on second day of looking without doing a weld test he asked employer why he didn't want him to do a weld test and he said well you'd look pretty stupid if you were lying that you were a welder and couldn't weld! Fair enough!

The only thing he has done is a Health and safety Course (one day) to get a green card to say he can work in public areas if needed, he done this through his employer because occasionaly they do work on the highways! He was told to apply for this by one agent which he did at the Tafe but then cancelled it when employer paid for course and got it through quicker!

We have a friend in Perth who is a Welder and he says there are no shortages on the work front.

Hope this helps and Good Luck with the process!

cheers
Nicky and Kev

Thanks for the help it is really good to know a little about prospects when get there and to have an idea how to go about applying for work.
Would be interested to know more about the state sponsored nursing application. How would we go about that as thought could do nothing until skills assessed?

Just looked at your thread, I am a welder going to Perth, hopefully in April 06.

My wife and I visited there in June this year and while we were there I visited a few firms with my C.V.

The first firm I went to asked me to go straight back there when we arrive for a trade test (6" pipe test). The job was to be hired out to BP and paid about
$40 per hour. When I returned to work back in the uk, they had already been onto my employers for a reference.

There seems to be lots of jobs for welders and the money seems to be better than here. I was looking at job adverts not so long ago and there are a few firms that specialise in shutdown work, the pay they were offering was $3200 a week lasting for three months but continuing work for the right applicant. I think if I'm going to start afresh I might aswell go for the most money and try and retire at 55 instead of 70.

Good luck with your application and if I get set up there before you brother, give me a shout when you get there and i'll put the word in for you.
