Hi there,
Just a word of caution to any bricklayers wanting to emigrate to Victoria, we have been here for 6 months now, and can honestly say we are not finding that bricklayers are in such high demand as people will lead you to believe, I have found work in my trade hard to find, and not very well paid.
I am highly skilled and qualified in my trade, and have never been out of work in the UK and always earnt top rates.
So any bricklayers planning to come to Victoria, make sure you have loads of cash, because you will not be as well off as you are in the UK.

hey jollyswagman,i have heard so many rumours about bricklayers and money over the last few months.
i am off to perth and have spoken to bricklayers there that are on $350 To $800 a day.bricklayers that cannot find work, cross dressing bricklayers, etc, etc.
problem is ,until you get out there and try it for yourself you will never know.
its the same as here mate, you know the old blluihst from the 1000 day bricklayer in the pub.makes sure everyone can hear him....."i'm on five grand a week,"..................."yeh allright mate"
i read the other day that perth was one of the fastest developing cities in the world, well if it is, how could you not find work?i tell you why ,because an ozzie subby has not nocked the door and asked,"would you like to come and work for me,i'll give you $2000 a day ,buy your sun block and have it put on by a sweedish blonde"?...
i dont know what to make of it all?i am just going,i know that i can afford to live,(not like a film star),and i will find work whatever it takes.
what ever you do jollyswagman i hope it all turns out well for you in perth .
i have got to go i am nackered ive laid 1800 bricks today and been in the pubs since 12.lol.

Friends of ours have complained about waiting lists to have their homes built, two years not uncommon, due to the shortage of brickies.
We have given up trying to get hold of a brickie at the moment to work on our extension, they all seem to be working on new homes and I'm fed up of ringing around. If the price I was quoted to build a wall out the front (as an entry statement) is anything to go by, then it would be cheaper to fly my dad out here from the UK (he's a builder). They wanted $8000 for a 6ft high 15metre brick wall using approx. 1000 bricks :scared:

By the way the eastern states is absolute shite for bricklayers as they tend to build timber frame rubbish , where as we build brick in and out .Perth is a paradise for brickies .DONT GO EAST IF YOUR A BRICKIE YOU WILL GO BROKE ,sorry to shout
I have a friend who moved from Perth to Melbourne because his wife though Perth wasn't 'happening' enough. Although he is not a brickie, he is in construction. In Perth he had work & money coming out of his wazoo. He had a short, easy commute. Lived well. All good. Now in Melbourne, he earns less but his living costs have risen, his commute is a nightmare, the weather is sh1te & he struggles to get work. He hates it but at least his wife gets to go to trendy cafes & cutting edge boutiques.
West is best.
