Further to my previous post about my insurance with OSS Worldwide, they are flatly refusing to honour the claim, so my advice to anyone taking out (non)insurance is to make sure you know exactly what is covered. This will relate to any shipping firm not just OSS.

Small items, ornaments, furniture etc, is probably not worth insuring unless it is worth alot, the packaging is usually very thorough, and the amount of paper and bubble wrap they use is usually on the excess, so it is unlikely these things will get damaged.

If your taking TVs, PCs electrical stuff, then investigate the Mechanical/Electrical derangement option on the insurance as they probably won't mention it. If anything goes wrong with anything under this category and you don't have this, then you have no chance of pursuing a claim. My Pc was totally defunct when I got it, and my less than 6months old Sony Tv is damaged (cost of repair £800:scared: ), and although the damage is visible on screen, they just don't want to know , so beware !!

It's tempting to insure everything, but it is absolutely not worth it. Keep your money rather than throwing it down the nearest insurance drain!!

I was shot down last time I said this but I'll say it again

I was told by 2 shipping companies that electrical stuff is only covered if it is in its original packaging, i.e. housed in what it was originally shipped in. I personally can see the logic in that, it is being shipped in something that was designed to protect it in exactly these circumsatnces.

All of those that said I was wrong - have you actually either read the small print or even tried to make a claim on such items?

What is your dispute exaclty? Are they just blatanlty refusing to pay up?

It was actually in the original box, with the original packaging, as it was less than 6 months old. The only thing they did was actually overpack it with more stuff to fill in any spare gaps, so whether this made it not as secure - who knows.

The TV is badly colour distorted - first diagnosis was that it needed degaussing as it could have been caused by magnets. I had it assessed by a Sony approved engineer, who said there was damage to the shadow mask of the TV invariably caused by the transit causing the problem. My Pc just didn't work, so I conceded that I could not prove damage on that.

They are saying they will only pay up if there is actual physical damage. The fact that the engineer says it's damaged is irrelevant. They have also tried to tell me that I had no right to claim, as I didn't report the damage when the stuff was unpacked, to which I said I believed we had 30days in order to lodge a claim. All in all whatever I've said they just keep saying no claim, so I've pretty much given up now, thought I was doing the right thing by insuring it, but a complete waste of money.

This is only , were you have to prove Electrical derangement, ie the equipment ,in its original packaging was "dropped" to do this you would have to get a Certificate signed by an approved electrical technician. What D/T was on about was visible damage to the outer cabinet of the TV, for this he should be covered........ MM
