Default waiting period for newstart allowence

Hello,
Just wandering does anyone have faced this earlier or not. I got my PR and then entered Australia 2 years back. After that I was outside of Australia for 10 months. Then I returned and was working in aged care for 13 months. For the last one month I don't have any job and now want to claim newstart allowance.

But my question is as I was outside of Australia for 10 months within this two year or 104 weeks, will it create any problem to claim this allowence?

Will appreciate your response.

Thanks, Mamun

My understanding is that you have to be in country for 104 weeks to qualify.

Different benefits have different eligibility requirements. What Human Services do say though, is that if in doubt complete the forms and apply anyway. That way, if you can claim it great, if not then once you become eligible you 'should' be in the system.

Well yes of course it would be a problem, you need to be resident for two years.

Newly arrived residents generally have a 104 week waiting period, with some exemptions

There are different rules for previous residents. But you would be subject to an 8 week (I think) exclusion period. And an asset test will be done.

So you've been a working resident in Australia for 13 months and now want to claim Newstart ?
