Default Votes for life for all expats

Your right to vote in UK elections

There is nothing like a vote to get the attention of MPs. Effective January 16, 2024 any British citizen living overseas can register to vote as long as they were previously registered to vote in UK elections, or were previously resident in the UK. You will need your National Insurance number, your UK passport (current or expired) and the address/postal code of the residence where you last voted, or your most recent address in the UK.

• Please register now as we never know when an election will be called. You can register to vote online at this link: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Exercise your right to vote to increase pressure on the UK to annually uprate all UK state pensions regardless of domicile.

Well we were once registered but the electorate we were in sent the postal votes out snail mail so late we couldn’t have returned them in time. After three years we just gave up! Now Australia is my home and I have a vote here it doesn’t bother me anymore. I don’t live there and apart from the frozen gov pension nothing affects me anyway.
If the vote could be made on line or earlier I might consider it. Not sure it is a major concern for any party in the UK so just having a vote may not help anyway.

I agree that the actual vote doesn't really help any party, however my take on it has always been that being on the electoral roll itself is the valuable thing. When I cam home last year it was relatively easy to get back on the roll, but it would've been helpful with things like rentals and utilities if I could have got on it in advance. So yes, for those remaining abroad, maybe not such a big issue, but anything that smooths the path for returnees much be good
