G'day costy!

When we moved here I bought my virgin brick (alcatel) with me, but found that as it's not a dual band it doesn't work here. I think (I'm no mob expert) it either needs to be dual band or GSM???

You can pick up an ozzie Virgin simcard for about $20.

Best to check with Virgin UK. Wife had Orange (UK) phone and SIM card, came out here on holiday to see me and found it didn't work. Spoke to Orange (Aust) and they said that the two networks are separate entities and would not work (OZ in UK OR UK in Oz). You would have to buy a new SIM card when you get here to get it to work if they are not compatible.

You will not be able to use UK PAYG Virgin Mobile Sim Cards here. You could buy an Aus virgin mobile SIM card whilst here that would give you much better rates that you would otherwise get roaming.

People love the convenience of global roaming until they see the bills. It is staggering the companies are allowed to get away with it.

You will have to get your phones unlocked before you can use the Virgin sim here.

We were with Virgin in the Uk, we rang them up and got the unlocking codes before we left. It is free as long as you have used more than 20 pounds credit up. 1 of the phones unlocked fine ( Nokia) the others gave us major problems. My phone (Sony)actually got blocked as they gave me the wrong codes which stops it working. Luckily they sent me a free replacement phone, but my Mum had to post it out here as we were about to leave when it happened.

Then when we got here 1 of the other phones had not unlocked properly so we had to ring them up a few more times. In the end it worked out and we bought new Aus Virgin sims which are $20 with $20 credit on them.

Just be aware that some of the phones are harder to unlock esp if they are old.

We have looked into all the packages here and Virgin are the cheapest. One benefit is you can text the UK for 20 cents! Which is so cheap.

If you get the $100 recharges the calls are even cheaper. Plus nominate your partners phone and you get half price calls to them.
