What on earth does getting 'yobbed' mean? I've heard of yobs obviously, I've never heard of being yobbed.

That's bizarre, why would you ask something like that ? The attackers could have been literally any nationality and as it occurred in Australia chances are they were Australian.

I asked him if it was a load of English louts (he is dinky di Australian) and he was embarrassed to say that no it wasn't, it was a group of early 20's Aussies that reside locally to the pub.

Re: Violent crime escalating in Perth
It's about time we had a war and drafted all this riff-raff to the front line as cannon fodder.

Re: Violent crime escalating in Perth
I would really love to see the official stats proving that. Sounds a little like an urban myth.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=yobbery It was actually scary the way they came towards us:unsure: O/H just smiles at them like the nut job he is and drives away, calling them all sorts of unusual names i couldn't repeat on a family forum like this:o |

As you don't live in my locality you wouldn't know. The pubs in Joondalup and the Woodvale Tavern (formerly known as the Moon & Sixpence!) is a hotbed for trouble. It may well be an urban myth but it is one that is longstanding and given credence by the local police.

But... Is it just me, or has violent crime escalated scarily over the past year or so in Perth? It seems that every morning there are reports of armed break-ins, hold-ups etc etc. Just this week off the top of my head I can recall an 84 year old woman in a nursing home being stabbed in the chest, the manager of a caravan park being beaten and robbed, several armed home invasions, shop owners being threatened with syringes/knives/guns and robbed. I'm not sure if they're being reported more, or that violence is on the increase. But it's bloody worrying. |
Re: Violent crime escalating in Perth
[QUOTE=the troubadour;9534406]Certainly not lies but it does appear to me that crime reporting does get a lot of newsprint and air time over other matters which seem to be little insight given into ever escalating prices in this city which of course may reflect in part on crime levels.
It is the media's job to report news - good or bad. People want to know what is going on in their community and look to the newspapers, local radio and TV for information, especially when a serious crime has been committed. Word gets round pretty quickly where crime is concerned. If the media don't cover the story then readers/listeners/viewers will phone up asking why. Thats certainly my experience as a news reporter for 12 years on a busy newspaper in West Yorkshire. It's no different here. |

Sorry Northernbird but I think that the whole of WA has yet to reach 2 million, so I think 1.5 million for Perth is off the the mark, but you know what it's like here in Perth, it's a small goldfish bowl and the media blows everything sky high for sensationalism .
Saying that, the crime rate has risen, but so has the population, and the police have had their abilities to police curtailed by the bleeding hearts and PC brigade. But on the whole, there is nowhere else better in Australia. |

It's obvious you have no idea what you are talking about. The media do not blow "everything sky high for sensationalism'' where crime is concerned. They report what happens. If someone robs a bank and shoots a person dead what do you expect them do ? Ignore the facts because you can't handle the reality. You don't need to "sensationalise" crime. The facts speak for themselves. I covered thousands of crime stories working as a journalist for 12 years on a busy city newspaper and all you do is report what happened. You don't need to sensationalise.
