Default VHS videos and web cams - advice anyone?

Hi all,

We're about to move to Oz shortly and need advice on two things:

1) Our toddler has some favorite VHS tapes that we'd like to bring. What's the score on compatibility. We know Oz is a different PAL system, but will bringing our UK player for playing only get over this?

2) Anyone using web cams to contact the UK? What are the requirements vis-a-vis broadband, what's the quality of communication like, and are there any makes of camera anyone would recommend? We've promised to look into this for the grandparents and buy some web cams before we go!

Your experience and advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

We took two UK tv's for spare family room together with VHS recorder and use those for playing tapes. Not sure if they will work otherwise. I have tried in other countries and they come out black and white.

We 'talk' every week to parents via webcam. We have a Logitech one which we got in PC world before we left. They also have the same one. We use MSN to chat and see them. If you just want to talk then you can use Skype. Quality can vary week to week, but generally ok. Sometimes you do get your voice back which can be a bit off putting but hey ho.

Buy a Logitech USB mic from PC World before you come have thicker wire and plug straight into usb port easier for skype then can use either headphones or PC speakers to hear.

Until I lost it we did use our Fuji 600 Digi Camera for webcam as well and got better quality off it than normal webcam. We did buy a sony handycam to use for same thing but we were miss sold it as turns out it doesn't video stream that's another one.

Thanks for your responses. Will bring our portable combination video/tv for ease. On webcam front, we're considering using Vonage voip in conjunction with a webcam. Do you know anything about Vonage as they only recently launched in Australia?

VHS video tapes work fine in Australian video recorders, we brought a lot of tapes from the UK and play them back in a video recorded purchased here in oz in 2003.

From what I understand the only difference with the TV's & Video recorders are the UHF tuners, making it difficult (or not possible) to tune UK TV's & videos into Australian analogue terrestrial signals (through the an1tenna)

The TV's & Videos work fine using the A/V inputs, so to use a UK TV set here you need either a digital set top box or foxtel etc
