Groceries.

More expensive Down Under than in the UK - but hey, I already knew that. And although I have been out of Australia for almost three years, I did not find them unduly expensive. Prices have definitely risen, but not as much as I'd expected.

For all you ex-pats who haven't yet made the big trip south, I took a few photos at Churinga Shopping Centre in Victoria. Note the price of lettuce: $1.78 (£0.71). Nothing to complain about there, I think. :D

The Aussie $ is currently running at about 40p, so if you want to know how much those other vegies cost in Stirling, simply divide the marked price by 2.5.

I think you'll find that they're not too bad. :)

More groceries research. :)

The first of these four photos was taken in Hahndorf, at a local farmer's shop. 99c for a lettuce - that's 39.5p! Perfectly fresh, too; straight out of the ground, and into your hot little hands. Not too shabby!

It's amazing how the price comes down when you eliminate the middle-man.

Yes but hang on Vash - when you're earning AU$ that is very very expensive compared to the UK - it's not 39p, it's the equivalent of 99p.

and the equivalent of £10 for your pot of coffee on special :scared:

here goes a price of lettuce thread again....

Absolutely fantastic and well worth the wait.
It makes me wish we had done similar last year.

Australiana.

The Flippin' Pancakes restaurant in Sassafras, run by a British ex-pat and her son. A fantastic place to eat; friendly service, great food, and gorgeous scenery.

Cockatoos at Flippin' Pancakes, where they know they'll always be welcome.

:)

I think 99c for a lettuce is very cheap, and I reckon you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who believes otherwise. I certainly don't think it's the equivalent of 99p.

Anyway... since I don't want this thread hijacked by a debate, we'll have to agree to disagree on the groceries issue. :)

It was before all the latest threats. We left the UK on the 29th of July and returned on the 19th.

On both occasions, security at Gatwick was excellent but not prohibitive. We faced no restrictions on our return journey. :)

Mrs Stampede says that I received a couple of odd looks, but nobody asked me what I was doing so it's all good!

SA is a beautiful place; well worth a visit. :)

Yes, we're going back to live there in about 2 years' time. :)

For me, it's a return home; I was born and raised Down Under, but have spent the last 2 and a half years in the UK.

For Mrs Stampede, it's a giant leap into a whole new life.

I think she's very brave.
