The younger Australians (under 30s) at an American consultancy in Melbourne I've worked with in the past have heard of the Ivy League, but can't name them beyond Harvard, Yale, and Princeton! There was this one time I overheard them talking among themselves how the Ivy League was an elite group of colleges, and how difficult it was to get in, etc, I had to keep my mouth shut as I am from one of those they couldn't name! It wasn't like they were going to pay me more respect for what school I had attended. It was all down to your work experience. They might also have "heard" names of some of the top 20 colleges (from US News ranking, etc) or the big state colleges, but that's about it as far as the value of American education is concerned, in my personal experience anyway.
For IT and telecom jobs, most jobs are in Sydney and Melbourne.
All the best on your application.
