Leaving at weekend for oz for 5 weeks, trying to work out the cheapest method of having a mobile phone out there for the duration.

Is it possible just to buy a 'sim card pay as you go' - out there for an Oz network and just put it into my Sony ericsson 800 ? If so any ideas on price. Seen mention of unlocking, how do I know if mine is locked now or not ?, sorry if sounding thick.............

Alternative is if I didn't have my own phone to take over (may have to leave it at work), then what price to buy a 'pay as you go' whole phone ?

As time is limited thought I would ask on here as well as a quick trawl of internet for answers at same time.

Pay as you go SIM card is easy to get here. If you got your phone from the carphone warehouse it will already be unlocked. Easiest way to check is to put a mates SIM into yours from a different network and see if it works.

You can get sim cards from most newsagents, there are some for $2 sometimes or they normally cost about $10. There's unlocking codes on the internet, just type in 'Sony 800 unlock code' or something similar on Google and you'll be able to find it.

Or you can pick up phones for as little as $69 in places like K-mart, Target or Big W and sometimes Woolworths too. Nothing flash mind, but for 5 weeks they're OK.

You can buy a sim card for vodafone at Woolworths (Supermarket) for $2, then you need to buy a 'recharge/top up voucher', alternatively can buy a cheap pay as you go phone - on vodafone network, they do an LG phone for about $99..... not sure on the other networks.
Could you try someone elses sim card (from another network) to find if your phone is locked?

Thanks so much for all your quick replies............................what a marvellous invention the internet !!!

Looking forward to escaping the cold and visiting OH family Brisbane and Sunshine coast..................OH will have to be dragged kicking and screaming back on the aeroplane at the end.............he just wants warmth heat and light on his Australian body, which he has lacked here for the last 10 years.... So I can see us moving back there next year. Pre children in our young and carefree days we lived up in North Queensland for 7 years.........but how things have changed out in Oz with regards to cost of living / wages since we were there 12 years ago. Oh gosh I could ramble for ages about this one, but don't have the time, I have loved reading all your stories over the last couple of weeks since I found this site. Bit frightening how this forum can influence people though.... with such life changing decisions........................
