Default Unlocking your UK mobile

Can anyone help me please? We have arrived in Oz and I was going to change my sim card from UK network 3 to Oz network 3 but have been told they are different companies and I still need to unlock my mobile from the 3 network in the UK. How can I do this from Oz without having to wait 2 weeks for a code to be posted through to me? Any ideas?

Thanks

I had the same problem with Vodaphone when I arrived. Telephoned Voda in U.K and they emailed me the unlocking code within 2-3 days. Use your U.K simcard and it won't ost you anything to call them.

Ah, hindsight is perfect vision - get it unlocked by a little man in the market before you leave UK is usually the best way to go. You might find a phone shop which advertises that it unlocks but I cant say that I have seen any around here. Try one of the Asian electronics shops not affiliated with any provider.

I had the same with Vodafone UK and called them, they gave me the code over the phone for free as I was staying with Vodafone but in Oz. Only thing you need when you phone is the IEM number which is found inside the phone under where the battery goes.

The 3 Network coverage in Oz is at best "poor" it works great in the CBD and areas with large populations but once you are out of these areas your coverage will be non-existant...Your best bet is to start again and go with a provider with better coverage, you can pick up sim free phone from stores like Woolies, Kmart from as little as $60 for a Nokia then go with someone like Optus or Virgin prepaid. Virgin do a $25 beancounter tariff (online only) all calls are 10 cents a minute and they use the Optus network so good coverage nationwide....
