Larry Knight used to work at the Bendigo mine, so many of the workers there knew him personally, and this union has a long history of helping the widows and children.

Safety is a major concern in many industries, mining, aviation, construction etc, because accidents that occur in them tend to be fatal. Nobody signs on to do a days work not to go home at the end of the day! I suppose you'd say they are all lazy bastards and horsewhip them back to work (preferably in shackles), and if another cave in occurs, well tough, thats mining!

Where a union spokesperson or leader come from is irrelevant (do you know
what that means?). It is how they conduct themselves and how well they prepare their case as advocates for the employees that matters.

Then these bad apples need to be investigated and go through the court system. The only way to get rid of them is to come down hard on them once criminal activities have been adequately proven. This would help clean things up and deter future potential abusers and intimidators.

That's the tricky part, kiwi - too many of those bad apples have very good connections within the Labour Party.

The Cole Royal Commission proved criminal activities and civil misdemeanours all over the place - and yes, those findings were acted upon. Fines and jailings were dished out to guilty parties, and many people were optimistic that a deep, lasting and oh-so-necessary change was finally taking place. But the CFMEU is a hydra; cut off one poisonous head, and two more spring up in its place.

Much more needs to be done before the CFMEU is entirely fit for human consumption. However, it is surprisingly difficult for the government to investigate a union which doesn't want to be investigated...

FYI one of the leading campaigners for workers compensation reform in WA is a lawyer who has seen first hand the struggles and injustice that many suffer through the present system here. And the Labor government has done absolutely nothing to fix the situation!

Isn't the ALP the left wingers you refer to? Well newsflash, the ALP both state and federally has for a long time been full of factions, right, centre, and left. And within those factions there are degrees of right, centrist and left.

A mindless comment. If goodwill towards those who suffer must be limited to coming from those who had recent and direct contact with the victim, then following that logic there would no overseas aid, no telethons or other fundraising events for any victim or needy people.

Go tell Mrs Knight and her children they aren't entitled to the money raised by the workers at Bendigo mine then, you asshole.
