How do I notify the UK govt that I wish to receive the NZ superannuation instead of my UK old age pension.
I am currently 63 and will be eligible for the NZ super at 65.
I have tried unsuccessfully to create accounts with the government gateway.
Is there another way to make contact or do I have to sit up all night making expensive phone calls

Unlike most countries, where you can claim the state pension and whatever the equivalent is there, NZ only allows one or the other I believe. Presumably the NZ option is higher.

Right then. Here is what you need to do by way of getting in contact with the UK overseas pension dept ref your upcoming pensioner status in a couple of years to come ------ Nothing !
Nothing at all . You need do nothining. It is nothing you need to do . Do nothing. Dial no numbers . No need to create any account . No need to sit up all night litsening to lift music and swearing under the breathe.
You - Need - Do - Nothing

When you are coming up to 65 ,and so eligible for NZ super ,you will either contact NZ Work and Income ( superannuation) or they will contact you . You may have to go into a W&I office with verified ID or you may be now able to do this online . You will then be handed or sent a hefty booklet to fill in to apply for your superannuation. I think you can also apply and fill in the long form online.

Within the booklet is a page(s) devoted to whether you would be entitled to any other pension from anywhere. For this you will answer yes - and give the details. Details being a UK state pension becomes due at the age of 67 or whatever. That is it. That is all you have to do at the time you are about to hit 65 here in NZ.

Come closer to your UK state retirement age you can ping the pension dept of NZ W&I if they have not already contacted you . They will arrange for the UK to send to you their UK state pension application booklet for you to fill in and return to them. This also requires proof of ID. It also requires your work history and past UK address etc. You just fill in what you can. It is to check your contributions level and the like. You also fill in the two important pages which states that you want your UK pension payments to be paid to NZ governmentdirect and not to you. You then post that back to the UK. That's it. It is law and must be done.

After ages you will receive a letter from the UK pension dept which will tell you the amount of UK state pension allocated to you. You also receive a letter from the NZ W&I pensions dept which states how much the NZ government is to receive from the UK in this respect.

Both state that any changes in circumstances that you contact them. There can be annual forms to check on this too.

The two countries talk to each other because of the reciprocal agreement so they both have their beady eyes on this.

This will all depend on whether or not you (1) intend to remain in NZ . (2) that your UK state pension is = to or equivalent to NZ superannuation. Mine was but I still elected the NZ Super.

In New Zealand you must choose which you will uplift upon NZ retirement age of 65. That is the law. You cannot have both. The UK is contributions based , but the NZ one is based on age (65), NZ residency/citizenship.

If you choose the UK pension the it will be frozen in time and you receive no winter fuel allowance. You also cannot apply for this until you are of age which nowadays is perhaps 67 or so.

The NZ superannuation kicks in at 65. It is not means tested. There is a winter fuel allowance .

I bothered to make a post best I could, having been up and down the place more times than a ferret in a trouser leg.

You might consider to add your 5 eggs too. I've not been through Queenstown for a fair old while. Nor come up and under as it were.
We more tend to drop down from above.
