Re: TV Licence
You lot don't know when you're well off!
No cable in this area (and I'm ten minutes from the city centre), no satellite allowed 'cos "they" can't control what we watch on satellite. 3 English-speaking channels - in a country where English is the official language - and one of those is news, one is only English from 9-11pm (apart from kids' programmes during the day). The same 4 local "artistes" in every local show, the rest is CSI or reality TV imported from the US plus cheap Canadian DIY & cookery. Oh and I'm told that censorship of cable TV is getting so bad that even a mild cleavage shot is blurred out. Thank Dog for DVDs. |

Okay for those that didn't get it. Not necessarily Matt.
With "I find the adverts on ABC really annoying", I was taking the mickey out of people who complain about the adverts and hanker for the BBC. ABC is the mini-me of the BBC even to the point where both organisation have the nickname "Auntie". ABC is as advert free as the BBC. I do agree that the adverts on Aussie commercial TV is worse than UK commercial TV but aside from that I can't see what's so bad about it compared to the UK. Not enough to be worth paying a licence for... |
Re: TV Licence
Oooh no, we don't allow porn.
Went to see Love Actually at the cinema when it came out - at the end all my friends were saying, "Who the hell were that couple at the end???" Porn couple, completely cut out. Violence and swearing, however - you can see that 24/7. Positively encouraged. |
Re: TV Licence
Wendy, I agree about UK TV. When I go back to visit my folks I can't believe just how many soaps and Jerry Springer type programmes there are.
Give me a documentary and I'm happy; looking forward to moving somewhere I can get Animal Planet, Discovery, etc. |

Re: TV Licence
You have to understand that this is a country where:
a gathering of 5+ people is considered a demonstration (something they took delight in using recently to prevent a group of gay blokes going on a hike) until recently, oral sex (between a consenting, mixed couple) was illegal unless it was followed by penetrative sex ohhh, lots more examples I could give but I wouldn't know where to stop. Is it any wonder that the youth of the country are so clueless about sex and relationships that they need a government-run dating club? I wish I was joking... |
Re: TV Licence
Hey Vim.
You actually watch Iron Chef. That has to be the worst program I have ever seen! |
Re: TV Licence
No fee to pay. One of the reasons (not a major one but it helped us decide) we moved to the UK is the poor TV in OZ.

Re: TV Licence
No not because of the TV...it was only something we said to each other as a benifit, but we both agree that there is better TV over here. Atleast for British made Dramas, although you can keep the soaps.
