Default Is this true when you buy new TV in QLD,

We just bought TV in the GC, well the sale person told my OH, people who buys TV in QLD need to buy this extension, for their TV, DVD, Ariel, PC, & their satellite, he said when you get the storms & lighting, it would go through your Ariel which would burn your TV & all other things connected to your TV, he said doesnt even have to be on.
Is this right has any of you burned your TV during the lighting storm.
The extension is only $545. dead cheap.

$545 seems a lot. All you need is a surge protector. We bought ours for about $130.

When I lived in England, lightening hit our house and blew up 3 TV's, the central heating electrics and most of the fuses back at the consumer unit.

So yep - it does happen .. I doubt a surge protector as people descibe below would be much use for a direct strike.

Cheapest way

Im such a smart arse

All those pommy plugs you chopped off !!

Put em back on the new appliances and they will all be fused independantly !!!

Or just use extension bank ( with uk plug on ) but aussie sockets, and plug into wall via adaptor.

Dead easy dead cheap !!!!

Works 100 % ( apart from broadband , but then ours is underground )

I don't think a surge protector would cope with the power given by a lightning strike. They are to even out power surges in the normal power supply.

Som time ago the house next to us had their phones blow-up, break a glass table and burn a hole in the carpet when lighting hit a tree that the phone lines went through. The tree also caught fire.

If you have an external ariel then you would need to remove the ariel cable from the wall socket and the back of the tv or whatever so that there is not a power jump from cable to equipment.

we have just bought a new tv and computer chap in shop recommended a single surge protector for high voltage strikes about $50 not forgetting one for telephone socket if you have computer connected. He had recently lost loads of white goods when lightening hit his local sub station and wasnt covered on insurance as seen as act of god

I have surge protectors as well and always unplug all the stuff during a lightening storm. Main power cords, tv antenna, phone jack etc.
Never been hit, but you never know what could happen.

Better safe than sorry

Here in the UK we have surge protectors on our computer etc. Just our luck we got hit by lightening which travelled down the phone line and burnt out our phones and modem. They were turned off at the time but plugged in. About 6 of our neighbours had the same problem from the same lightening strike.

Interested to hear you can surge protectors for the phones too.
