This has been on the cards for about 10 years - if you have kids you
should have got them their own passport years ago.

Quite correct. Most Western countries no longer put children on parent's passports anyway. The UK ceased doing so in October 1998, so only UK passports issued before then will be affected.

It's also important to be aware that this requirement applies even if you are just going to *transit* the US. For example, if flying from London to Auckland via LA, you have to clear US Customs and Immigration and technically visit the US even if you are getting back on the plane. And without the right passport and visa (if applicable) to do this, you won't be allowed to board the plane in London.
