The steel is stretched, so that when the good ol' UK reaches it's average temperature, the steel won't stretch too much further and buckle. If they stretched it more, to take extreme temperature's into account, it would be too brittle in the winter and crack.

So, until our technology catches up to the to the rest of the world, what would you rather? Cracked rails or buckled rails? Either way, you die!

Every train crash means more money ploughed into maintenance, research, re-laying tack, new signals, new computers and more government handouts. Taxpayer pays for taxpayers misery.

Follow the money.
