Well said! Those figures are complete nonsense.
  • Indian population of Australia at mid-2006: 153,579 (source)

  • Number of recorded assaults in 2007: 176,427 (source)

  • Number of Indians assaulted in Australia every year: unknown

  • Murders in India per capita: 0.0344083 (source)

  • Murders in Australia per capita: 0.0150324 (source)

If there's one good thing Australia has going for it, it's that our murder rate is less than half the size of India's.

From what figures? Are you talking about per capita rates or total murders? How is it possible for the state of Victoria to have the same murder rate as an entire country of more than 1 billion people?

I should clarify that by saying "of Indian origin".

130 Indians attacked countrywide, the Indian high commission says. Of these, 30 were students.
It does seem a bit low to me

And to clarify possible doubts about temporary students....

The 2006 Census takes place on Tuesday 8th August and counts everybody in Australia, including international students, travellers and tourists.

It is often thought that only Australian residents are included in the Census count. This is not so. All visitors (short and long term) are included - whether in Australia for study, work or play.

2008/9 - Homicide - 3.4 per 100,000.
A further breakdown of that number.

Page 19 Homicides recorded by offence 2008/2009
  • 100 Murder (1.88 per 100,000)
  • 68 Cause Death by Driving (1.28 per 100,000)
  • 8 Manslaughter (0.15 per 100,000)
  • 3 Accessory after the fact to murder (0.06 per 100,000)
  • 1 Infanticide (0.02 per 100,000)
  • 1 Child destruction (0.02 per 100,000)
The homicide/murder difference is worth noting. I hadn't realise it was so different till I just saw that.

The overall murder rate in Australia is about 1.63 per 100,000 based on the ABS Year Book Australia, 2004 covering 1997-2002. Not sure if it has changed much, but it varied between 1.5 and 1.8 in those years.

And thanks to ABCD for showing that Victoria's per capita murder rate is in fact nearly half that of India's.
