Default TRA / Self Employed / Accountants ref?

Hi there
Husband self employed and Agent has mentioned getting a letter from our accountant to confirm time self employed etc? I thought a letter from Solicitor would be ok (because we can get that). We have never had an accountant and have always done our own accounts and tax returns?

Can anyone give any advice, will Solicitor letter be enough?

how could a letter from your solicitor prove that? hubbie is self-employed but has an accountant, so we did get letter from him confirming that. we also sent copies of 5 years tax returns (or it could be 6 years, cant remember, its that long ago!!!). we also sent a letter from the inland revenue confirming that hubbie is self-employed. i also wanted to send a copy of hubbies sub-contractor card and his public-liability insurance, but our agent said it was not needed.

if i was you, with no accountant, i would get copies of the last 5/6 years tax returns, letter of inland revenue (dead easy, just call them up and ask them to send it out, and explain why you need it), and put it in your stat dec that you have no accountant, do your own returns etc.

Hubby is self-employed, but uses accountant for end year returns, so included letter from him, but I also put copy of last VAT return we completed to show that Inland revenue do know he is who he says!
