Default TRA references for the self employed

Hi,

OH is at the TRA stage of the process. He is a self employed Painter & Decorator and we have been told that he needs references from customers and suppliers.

Do we give these people a letter to sign or just the basics on how to word a letter themselves?? Does anyone know what the basic wording should be? I have been asking our agent so much recently that I thought I would ask this here first!! I know this is a really important part of the process and I wouldn't like it to go wrong just because we got a few letters wrong.

I hope someone can help!

Thanks,

Yvonne

Hi Yvonne

My OH is a self employed carpenter. He wrote a statutory declaration regarding all the work he carried out as a carpenter, the tools and materials he used etc etc, and when he commenced self employment. He also got references from people he had worked for over the years, when he asked for them he told them basically what needed to be in them, but left it up to them how they did it. They basically said when he had worked for them and what he had done, some where more detailed than others, but the agent seemed happy with them. He works on a labour only basis so he didn't really have much from suppliers, although he did get references from two companies that he regularly fits stairs and kitchens for.

Hope this helps.

Dolly

painters are us..

ref..peter the painter ,

peter worked for us between,01/10/67 t0 01/6/69.

he was employed as a painter, and his daily tasks included,...go into as much boring obvious detail as you can..from taking the lid off the paint ,to sanding, choice of brush etc.etc.

peter was a good time keeper,etc,etc..

as much detail as possible, remember someone on the other side of the world has to build up a picture of your other half...

Hi Yvonne,

We did the same, have just posted of our app to the tra. My OH is a gardener and is going on experience. Got refs from sub contractors saying when he worked, nature of work carried out and personal notes (hard working, reliable . blah blah) Didn't have refs from suppliers, so provided receipts for regular purchases/tools maintenace. Took a while to collate, but we were pleased with what we've sent.

Hope this helps

Jo

Hi My OH is also a painter and decorator the advice in the format of a letter from Astonman was spot on.
Also if you can attach photos of the jobs you do with an explanation of what you are doing that helps as well. remember never think you are sending them to much, just send everything plans spec broachers of types of paint you use..ect..ect. If you need any more help send me a PM and we will be happy to offer any assistance we can.

Where in OZ are you going?
