Default for those coming out with medical problems

just to let everyone know, if at all useful!

That you can not registrar with medicare for 10working days, so if you do have a medical condition it may be worth getting extra medical cover to cover you over this period!

hope this helps hugs gee x

... erm, that's not entirely correct ....

If you hold a PR visa, then you are entitled to medicare from day 1 in Australia. If you visit a Medicare office in person, they will issue you a temporary medicare card (until the proper one arrives in the post 10 or more days later).

If there is some kind of "cock-up" with the computer, or let's say you need a doctor before you've had a chance to visit a Medicare office and get a temp card, you can claim the cost back later from medicare.

Is this different in different States?
We are in Perth on a 457 visa and registered within a week of arrival at a medicare office. We were given a temp card too until the real one arrive a couple of weeks later.
On the other hand, we have insurance with Australian Unity, and had to register within 14 days of arrival or they wouldn't put cover in place for two months so some reason....
