Default Advice please: thinking of moving to Melbourne

We currently live in Hobart and we are thinking of moving to Melbourne for a few years.

We anticipate living in a rental whilst there, preferably on a good tram/rail/bus route for an easy commute to the CBD.

Does anybody have any recommendations for a quiet suburb to look at initially?

Will you be with kids ie schools?

Do you need to be by the sea or are character homes more appealing with treelined streets?

Will you be nightclubbing? or Fine Dining?

Do you have a budget in mind, size of property ie 2 bed apartment v 4 bed house?

no kids, just the 2 of us, seaside or character homes both ok, no clubbing but interested in seeing live bands, 2 or 3 bedroom place preferable, as for budget we don't know much about the rental market in Melb.
