Oz now works the longest hours in the world.
From Wikipedia, a graph of average annual working hours around the world:

Australia doesn't appear on that graph, but according to this article from June 2006, Aussies work an average of 1800 hours per year.

Which puts us in the region of Greece and the USA.

Good advice, If you like living in the UK and have a decent standard of living with a nice house in a nice area then don't for gods sake come here just to try it before you die. Every day is like being dead from the neck up.

If you all need a graphic idea what it's really like here for those that have a slightly higher set of standards then visit you local wood with a nice big stick and try and perform bowel surgery on your self. Almost every week here is like a trip to that woods with that stick!
A very entertaining read. But look; things might change! By your own very means. Noone minds a whinger mate, its when people get bewildered over nothing barely off the boat. I won't have you pigeonholed or feel pressured over what you say.

When I lived in Central Europe, there were companies doing that early arrival stuff for you, I turned them down and did it myself. Here, a) its not rocket science, b) people speak English.

the syntax seems vaguely familiar!

The staggering levels of red tape are matched only by the complete incompetence of every organization you will have to deal with..... we have had DIMIA lose one of four, emailed x-rays, we had the bank screw up our mortgage application, twice. You will be constantly asked to provide information that you couldn't possibly have as you have only just arrived in the country. If you don't have an Oz driving licence you may as well not exist. Phone, gas and electric companys have ALL screwed up or failed to show up. Telstra told us they don't work weekends.
Sorry to hear you are having problems - it is very early days for me as I arrived on Tuesday pm but I have been really pleased with what I have managed to do, medicare number, tax file number (they resurrected my old one from several years ago), mobile sim etc. Even managed to have a hair cut, spent an afternoon at South Bank and had a wander today around Roma Street Parklands. Australia is very laid back which is one of the reasons that many of us move here. It can be frustrating if you want everything to be exactly as you had it before you left but try moving to Spain or somewhere with a language barrier on top and you will be thanking your lucky stars. Chill out - does it really matter if it takes a few more days???
