Hi!

Good points. I didn't answer yafm, because I didn't want to go into that.
Just one small point: there's negatives everywhere, some the same, some different. And of course in different proportions.
Just thought i'd say my piece on this. You asked "why are people emmergrating in the first place" Well yafm is hardly gonna say, " because of the really cheap cost of living and traffic free journeys to work etc" is she? Yeah, we all know our own views on the negs and positves and we all have our different reasons for going, but when we are positive us poms just get called dreamers! Hey ho, at the end of the day its a personal chioce aint it Good luck to all who have the courage to try it, and to all those who have been there and decided its not for them

hear hear!
maybe i'm just a dreamer but at least in 30 years time i will either be happily retired in Australia or sitting with my grandad children on my knee saying 'when i was 38 i emigrated to Australia, it didn't work out but at least i had the guts to give it ago!'
god if we didn't have dreams/ambitions/hopes then what would we have!!!
best regards

Maybe I'm thick, but:

1. Why do a lot of people buy a house after a few weeks in Oz/NZ???
Why don't you rent for a while first, see where you end up getting a job/like living, and then buy?

2. Why are so many of you really 'migrating'? By this I mean in the sense of it being so permanent? Why don't you say, well, we're going for a while, and then we'll just see?
My idea with this is that you do sell your house and take all your stuff, but still think, 'we can come back'.
Because isn't it a huge step(risk), if you've only been on holiday, or haven't been at all? How do you know for sure you'll like it?

3. Why do people make the move while they haven't sold their house yet, and they are depending on the money??
I guess it's sometimes maybe that the visa needs validating, but why don't you then sell the house earlier and rent for a while?

Anyway, I KNOW this doesn't apply to everybody, but it does to quite a few I've read about on this site. I'm asking about them, and not the many people who do it differently, because of course everybody''s different and has personal reasons etc.

Anyway, I hope you all understand what I mean....

Seeyas round,

Simone

We have just had enough of UK at present, we have made a s*** load of cash on our house, and want to go for it...
we are going to sell up in the uk keep a lump sum back (plan B), and take a year out seeing what aus is all about...worst case we come back and buy another house......life is about risks or else you'll get to 50/60 and think WHAT IF I DID......

I'm going to Oz because I want something different, a bit of an adventure, and I like Oz. And maybe I hope that on some fronts it'll be a bit nicer than Holland.
But I don't hate Holland.
And I'll be moving from a small town in Holland, to a big city Perth. And that'll probably be very different, not even taking in account the different country. So I'll probably find it very busy and that there'll be more crime. But I'm just thinking of it as an adventure. And if I find I really don't like cities (I think that'll happen after a few years) then we'll either move to the country, or we'll come back to Holland.
Hi
Can I ask what small town in Holland? I lived and worked in Hillegom for 3 years then went to Oz to give it a go.

When you get to 60 you will not remember if you did or not, and if you do, you will not remember why you did.

I'm afraid I'm misunderstood with question 2. I didn't mean why are you emigrating. I know why, I'm doing it myself too.
I also know there are heaps of people who are positive that are not dreamers. I am positive too a lot of the time, and I don't think I'm a dreamer (well, sometimes).
This question was aimed at people who are saying: 'well, we are going cos we hate where we are now, and we are probably not coming back!'
So, to be clearer: this question was aimed at people who say: we know it'll be better etc and we won't be coming back.
I know most aren't like this(enough prove in this thread that people do realise they may come back), but I've read enough posts of people who do seem to think this.
And I'm thinking, how can you say that?

But none of those people are answering! Or they are not answering the question how I mean it. Not that they have too, and migrating is all personal choice, I don't care what you do, but I'm curious. And that's why I asked the question, and if noone wants to answer fine. But I hoped they would've, to explain.

Is this all nonsense or confusing?, cos I'm getting myself confused too

A very good post(my opinion From the thread 'just back from hols'
Hi Tina

Yes we now think we mustv'e been cazy to have just uprooted everyone and gone over without first having visited! Nothing that you read and no-one that you speak to can really tell YOU how your going to like it. We all want different things from where we live.

I would have loved to have gone up to Queensland but time prevented us. To be honest I'm not even thinking about buying property over in Oz when we go. We are going to rent a unit and it will probably have to be a 2 bed (even tho we have 2 kids). The flats are HUGE and usually have use of a pool/gym etc. We are going to give ourselves 2 years to decide whether to commit to buying a place. I really don't know if it will be for us long term.

But yes the hol was fab and we got home to a letter from DIMA saying we had approx a 50 week wait!!

When are you off? Are you heading to Queensland?

Kerry

Don't disregard the negatives that are posted, they're very valuable and more often than not will sort out the people who will make it out here and those that won't.

I could list a whole load of negatives about Perth, but that doesn't mean I don't want to be here or that it isn't a great place. But it's not for everyone.

Don't put any pressure on yourself, come with an open mind and just relax and enjoy what Perth has to offer.

House prices are crazy and to put it bluntley people are taking the p*ss a bit! But some of the houses aren't selling now because they are way over priced and people realise that. Very few good houses are coming up for sale in Hillarys and you'd be very lucky to find anything under $400K, you'll realistically be looking at around the $550K.

If you've got family out here then you've already got a head start, but we came here on our own and the excitement of discovering new things and meeting new people was a real buzz!

I dont think Ellens post was about the "bad side of OZ". wasn't it about the Realistic Post from another Social worker in Perth about the current work situation?

For any person with a family work prospects are very important, finding out you may have a long wait for a job, be sent remote or rural or your 3 year degree is not recognised in the majority of positions would be a bit of a rethink to most of us.

Surely Ellen finding this out from through this forum is not 'Bad', it would have been far harder to find it out when she got here with three kids in tow.

1 and 2 i agree with......3..sold the house and made the commitment to make the move.
not staying round here (east midlands) try aus, nz, then europe.
found lots of advice from this site , friends and relatives whilst still young(ish) and thought now or never.
where will i be in 5 - 10 yrs time?
who knows ........could be back here.
better to try then fail than blah blah youve heard the rest.

hoping to settle in s/coast a quieter life rather than 15 kids playing footy onto my garage door 20 foot away.
(i know......another dreamer)

Ah, yes well, I think we've all got a bit of dreamer in us.

But what is a true 'dreamer'?
I think someone who is sure they are not coming back, while not having lived there before.
Agree?
Luckily most of us are not like this, but a few have a big part of dreamer in them, and some have little bits.
I believe I have a tiny bit, because I'm not going because I hate Holland, but because I want something different. And for somethings of course I want it a bit better, like more space(gardenwise, city wise, country wise) and better weather.

Thanks for replying by the way!

And good luck with everything. Hope you don't have to move to many times before you'll find a children playing football free neighbourhood!
