Default Is there a vehicle MOT?

Sort of hi-jacking the Manxfamily car tax thread a little.

Does your vehicle have to be tested regularly in Oz by some means of MOT test?

Cheers

We're in WA. We've been told by some of dh's Ozzie colleagues that there is no MOT as such here. You are obliged to keep your annual registration up-to-date and provided that doesn't lapse, your vehicle doesn't need to be tested for roadworthiness. However, if your registration lapses then your vehicle has to be inspected.

Given the rusty state of some of the cars and pickups I've seen around Rockingham, I guess everyone here must be very diligent about maintaining their registration. Saw one today that was literally falling apart and was only held together with rust - would never have been on the road in the UK!

Already seen some cars that should not be on the road. One thing i will say is that even second hand cars seem to hold there value.

Hi

Vehicle registration like anything of great importance (just about) is totally state based.

NSW for example makes you have the equivalent of an MOT every year after the car is (I think) 3 years old.

Victoria only makes you have a road worthy when the registration changes ie, on sale of vehicle etc.

Same with the cost and what it covers. Victoria has quite a high rego (same sort of thing as road tax) but it covers all personal injury under the TAC. This is not so in other states.

Hope this helps.

hi in queensland there is no mot, only when you sell a car do you need to have a road worthyness test done. so potentially you could have the same car for 10 years and be driving a death trap! :scared: every state has own rules.

No MOT in WA. No roadworthy certificate needed to sell a vehicle here so it is true to say (because cars do not rot here very much) you could have bought a car in 1976 & never had anything done to it! Or very little anyway

If you are buying a car in WA you really need to get an independant assesment done either by the RAC or by a local repairer. Do not rely on the car yards own inspection! If you deal with some of the bigger franchises they dont seem too bad but smaller yards buy them, polish them & sell them (generally speaking)
