Hi
Can anyone tell me when the TFN was introduced in Australia.The reason I am asking is that my wife being Australian left Australia in 1971 and wanted to know wether she would have had a TFN.She cant remember filling out any tax returns.Any help would be appreaciated

hi, just found this on the net.

1988 Tax File Number (TFN) introduced,


further research revealed that the TFN was upgraded in 1988, so obviously did start well before then.

I've been here since 1979 and always had the same Tax File Number (27 years).

They definitely were around before 1988.

Just phoned the tax office in Australia and they said that the TFN only started in the 1970s.My wife who worked in the 1960s in Australia was told they could not trace that far back and she would have to apply for a new TFN when she returned to Australia .Hope this imformation helps anybody in the future.
