How about a chocolate orange? What do you tap it on to break the segments? :)

Is it now?! We often go to one then the other - it's possible we are the luckiest people here - 2 supermarkets - both new - around the corner from where we live....(remarkable) and we used to hate that drive to Berwick and the cramped store and carpark there.

If competition reduced the prices overall I would still patronise this Woolies.

Of course they do - this Buy Aussie thing is massively overstated - and exists in small niche markets - where it probably is quite cool to buy Stralian.

If you have an alternative then let me know.... I'm all bloody ears.

So Coles and WOW have saved you time and made your life easier, what a pack of thieves EH,strange how most big companies seem to do that isn't it.

The cook and I generally go shopping together.I have yet to see a shopping centre where the butcher greengrocer and baker are far removed from the thieves at coles or woolies. They even have cafes and food halls there.

We can have a coffee or a meal, and do the shopping, terrible isn't it.

The local baker charges more than both of them for his produce,I pay more,I much prefer his bread to theirs.Coles and woolies pull the customers in as anchor tenants,he benefits.

I benefit through being a Westfield shareholder as they would not build without having large tenants to anchor their risk with long term leases.

You benefit exactly as you say,not running all over the place and saving time.

Other people benefit by our fully self funded retirement, their taxes go else where ,hopefully to people that need that money(I know I'm dreaming on that one)

I would suggest that if these companies are making huge profits and have no competition, buy shares in them sit back and watch the income flow in.

I benefit as these companies that everyone complains about fund my retirement through these not large dividends.

In the future you will benefit as your super fund invests in these very same companies

Funny old world isn't it,anybody that expects us to pay for anything is greedy. When we line up expecting to be paid we are not greedy are we,we are always underpaid and off we go complaining again.

Tell you what... try reading the the thread and then come back and show me the bits where I had a go at Woolies and Coles.

I use Woolies multiple times a week because they are convenient. If they had more competition then they would probably be cheaper... and just as convenient.

A series of smart arsed comments only really work when directed at the correct person.. in this case you got the wrong man.

So rather than being a smart arse you came across as just being an.....

Gee and you said you only had two choices and were all bloody ears,I guess reality really does disappear if you refuse to see it

There am I thinking it was a series iof factual remarks and observations.

It is true that Australia would benefit tremendously from greater competition. The Coles/Woolworths duopoly is strangling suppliers as much as it is strangling consumers. We are in need of a huge shakeup via the introduction of new players in the marketplace. Unfortunately British supermarkets have proven extremely reluctant to try their luck in Australia. I still can't understand why.

What makes you think that? Virgin is a British company, and they were welcomed with open arms. BP is a British company and they've had no trouble. Vodafone is a British company and Australians were delighted when they arrived because it meant greater competition in the telco marketplace.

In fact, there are dozens of British companies operating in Australia and I don't know of a single one which has faced market resistance simply for being British.

I know people hate reality being pointed out but virgin and virgin blue are two different companies.

The closest ownership structure the same would be Qantas and Woodside.

Royal dutch Shell own around 35% of the ,shares in Woodside,it doesn't make them a dutch company. For a long time BA owned 25% of the shares in Qantas, didn't make qantas a british company.Branson owns around 30% of Virgin blue, the annual report will give you the exact shareholding. They are all OZ companies listed on the ASX

You're still right though, there are a lot of foreign companies.Without them we would not have the Nor th West shelf, foreign companies have most of the leases.Woodside would never raise the money for development on their own.

I haven't noticed a buy australian campaign,so again you are right. In the 60's when we had world cup willie we also had a buy british campaign (sing along ,I'm backing britain -we're all backing britain -we're all backing britain today, they don't write songs like that these days do they. All bloody rap isn't it ,where are the silly shock jocks when you need them.Where's Alf Garnett)

If there is a buy OZ campaign how dare they do as the poms did all those years ago.

What the Hell are you on?!

I have NO issue with Woolworths or Coles... I do NOT believe the bollocks that is spouted about 'the little guy' being cheaper and better quality. From my own personal experience its just not true. I do believe that if Coles and Woolworths had another couple of viable national rivals that they would be cheaper.

Now read the thread before posting again.... ****wit.

My God I’ve created a monster! What have I done? What has happend to this thread? But back to my original question, DOSE ANYBODY KNOW IF TESCOS IS COMING DOWN UNDERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????? ?????????????????????????????????

Clearly not and clearly Tesco isn’t intending to any time soon….

Being this has been my first posted thread on this forum I have been reading with much interest the comments, debates, pros and cons as to wether it would be a good thing if they came down under. There have certainly been contributors who think that any kind of foreign competition in Australia would be a bad thing. In fact I would go further and say that some people are not exactly, (how do you say) expatriate. Not just on this thread but on the rest of the forum as a whole….

Oh well not to worry a bit of protectionism isn’t a bad thing, if we had had a bit more of it back in the old country then maybe there would be more British owned industry left perhaps?

I think that in the next 5 years you will see more companies coming down under simply because of the population rise, new arrivals will demand more choice, and foreign companies would be stupid not to expand down under. Not just in the grocery business either. Australia at this very moment in time, I believe is starting to go through a period of big change. Population, housing affordability, immigration and much more is going to upset some sections of the great Australian public who don’t like change, expatriates included. But I think more choice is a good thing so bring it on!

Now what shall my next thread be about. I know just to get even more interest I will call it “IS M & S COMING DOWN UNDER? AND WHY DO ALL AUSTRALIAN'S SMELL AND HAVE A FUNNY ACCENT?” Whoops sorry only joking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (My wife is going to kill me now after reading this!).
