It damn well would from me. Ghastly place. I still don't see why people think it will actually help bring down prices though, they want to make their profits just as much as Coles and Woolies and adding just one more supermarket chain isn't going to make that much difference - imo anyway.
Tesco's, stay away please. Especially on prices. Not sure about the prices though..... I've a feeling the Cosa Nostra is alive and kicking here in Coburg. The prices in the Greengrocers are no cheaper than the Supermarkets. People in the know tell me that the Italian Greengrocers definitely are associates.... in fact back in the day of the Local Wars there were known henchmen (yes plural) working at various local Greengrocers.. I'm always surprised when I travel outwards to places where they have fruit and veg barns to see the difference in price.... not here in the North on High Sts at least. Maybe this is scaring Tescos off..... Doesnt seem to have affected Aldi yet..... Almost 100 pct certain that all our local GreenGrocers are involved. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/vic...-1111112437632 |

The small grocers around me are in general no cheaper than the supermarkets - the same is even more true of the local markets. Prahran market prices are steep. I have found one cheap greengrocer - the quality matches the prices though. |

All the prices are exactly the same. |

As for the headline prediction. Check this out.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/business/...971360163.html "Now Tesco is gearing up for a Coles bid". Not a single pommy in sight. Anyway. I would be surprised if they were thinking about now after turning it down in 2007. Maybe the current state of the GFC changed their minds. I would have thought their best bet would be to buy an existing company like Metcash. Woolworths chief executive Michael Luscombe has the most to lose in the fight for Coles. If a capable and experienced retailer wins its supermarket business, he might be in for tough competition from a well managed and well resourced rival. |

Can't believe the attitude of some on here.
Competition will drive down prices, that is an economic fact! Good Butchers, Bakers, Fruit and veg barns will always survive because the local market will support them. If not, then why have them in the first place? (just to keep a few in the minority happy maybe?). I don't care if it is Tesco's, or Walmart, or whoever, there needs to be more competition here and the sooner the better (that go's for other shops as well (clothes, shoes etc)). Roll on the first Costco store in SE Qld, I'll be queuing for my membership as soon as.:fingerscrossed:  |

I'm sure ABCD will explain to us why we are wrong in our perception ( I can almost hear the clatter of his keyboard from here :) ) and that the local retailers really are cheaper than Woolies/Coles but I have yet to see it anywhere in the Illawarra. Butchers tend to compete on quality and the veggie guys usually are cheaper, but as you said, at the expense of quality. When they match Woolies quality then they always seem to match the prices as well. Aldi may well be cheaper but I don't want to have to spend my time trawling round one supermarket and then have to go round another to complete the shopping because Aldi only had half the stuff I wanted. |

Aldi really has stuck a rocket up Coles and Woolworths prices. Aldi is definitely a lot cheaper (at least 33 pct) than every single high st greengrocer in my area. |

Costco is crap is the general consensus.... Everyone I know that has been reckons they wasted their time. Aldi has them beaten on price for much smaller amounts in the grocery line.... JB HIFI and the Good Guys beat them on electricals.
I doubt if they will expand or succeed. |

Thanks to the post-war European immigrants of the 50s and 60s, Australians have enjoyed a superior coffee culture for more than half a century. We are accustomed to high quality coffee served by proper baristas in real cafes. We don't want some frothy American muck with a stupid name served by a spotty teenager in a poorly fitting apron. I found it virtually impossible to get a proper coffee during my entire time in the UK. They just don't have a coffee culture over there. |

You might want to rethink that. Starbucks has struggled in Australia ever since their ill-fated arrival in 2000. In 2009 they closed more than two thirds of their Australian stores at a cost of 650 jobs.
