Temporary Visa to Permanent
Hi there, just wondering if there are anyone out there who went to OZ on temporary visa and then applied for PR. How long did you have to wait before you can apply for PR?
Cheers,

I have heard people say there is a waiting time, but I have not heard of it. Perhaps if you apply too soon in TR visa, it looks like you are trying to buck the system?
We applied after nearly 3 years. Getting skills assessed took about 3 months (lots of correspondance) and then sent our application in Oct, had medicals in May, visa letter in July, went overseas in Sept to validate. So 9 or so months...

there is no waiting time, so long as you fulfill all the requirements for the PR visa.

We have to apply for temporary visa because of hubby's job transfer. But we would like to apply for PR in order to buy a house and live there on a permanent basis even if hubby's job didn't work out. Imagine having to leave if can't find work within 29 days! :scared:

I was sponsored to come by employer and so I had a job, but they would not help with PR.
The PR process is exactly the same for 'onshore' and 'offshore' applicants.
Surely if your hubby has a temp visa, he must have a job which is in demand, so there is no way you would be leaving after 29 days!

We are here on a temporary visa and are going through the PR application process at the moment. We are lucky in that the company started the process for both at the same sort of time using the 457 to get us out here quickly rather than instead of the PR.
There is no waiting time as far as I am aware. We have been told that it should be through in another few months but we shall see, medicals etc have been done so now it is just a case of waiting. As we are being sponsored it can all be done onshore and they are planning for the whole thing to take about 6-9 months start to finish.
Good luck.

This has also been asked and answered on the immigration forum. The bottom line is that there's no minimum time in general, however for *some* applicants (not all) you need to be in Australia for 2 years before you can qualify.
And if your employer won't sponsor - usually means big trouble.
The DIMIA migration booklet 5 contains pretty much all you need to know about ENS and RSMS.

In my case I was sponsored by a company working in a very specialised field and outside of that company there is no demand.
So it may be a job in demand but only by the one company.

I am awaiting my 3 month trial period at work to finish and then I will be applying for PR. I am here on a 457 subclass visa and my employer has agreed to sponsor me. You don't need to be here for a specific time period in order to apply for PR and if your employer sponsors you for PR you dont have to leave the country whilst your visa is granted, whereby if you apply independently you have to leave australia and give a forwarding address to get your visa.

I don't know what you mean by a 'forwarding address' - people who need to leave Australia for visa grant usually take a week's holiday in Auckland or Singapore and have their visas stamped there.

You do not have to give an overseas address.
