We are applying through my husband who is a carpenter. Just wondered if there is anyone teaching out there who can give me any info, whats different do you need anything to prove apart from certificates and references?

I can't speak for Vic as we live in Bundaberg, QLD but teaching here is so much nicer than it was in the UK. The first term was pretty quiet but I put that down to being new to the area and the fact that all the teachers were fresh back after the long holiday. Since then however, I have been working almost flat out. Most of the work has been short term contracts at the same school. All the supply work in QLD is dealt with by TRACER, but sometimes you can be booked directly by the school. I think that being booked by the school is better as you know exactly when you will be working. Here in QLD you can't apply for perm work unless you have done your 'rating'. However, you can't do this until you have had 20 days in the same school. To get through the 'rating' procedure you need to supply all the paperwork that has already been supplied at least 5 times already (I bet you think I'm kidding), have lesson observations and an interview that lasts about 45 minutes. Once you have been through all this you will be able to apply for perm jobs unless your rating comes back as unsuitable. Remember that this is for QLD it may be very different for VIC.
Even though you are applying through your husband (same occupation as my other half) you will need to find out from VIC education department whether you need to get your skills assessed by NOOSR so that you can teach. The only other advice I have for you is make sure that you have lots of copies of your docs. Now that I am doing my rating, I am a set short
and need to track down a JP.If I can help in any other way, send an email or pm.
Good luck.

Hi
I am a primary school visa and we will be heading out to Queensland in 8-10 weeks. I have absolutely no idea what I should be doing to get myself sorted with a job, or at least supply when I get to OZ. Have spent so much time getting husbands skills assessed and sorting visa that my job has been forgotten.
Any help would be great as I am very confused and scared.

I am not certain about this, but I think you need to have 4 years of training, not just 3 to teach out here. So if you did a degree and then a PGCE you would be fine, but with just a 3 year Bachelor of Education that might be a problem.
Maybe someone else knows a bit more about this.

Hi,
I am teaching Year 6 on the Gold Coast in a private school. Not sure where you are heading in QLD but getting the job I have was difficult. Obviously it is very popular down here and as Teach already said you cannot apply for permanent positions in the State system. I would go to the government site and download the various application packs you need. You need to apply to Queensland College of Teachers for registration (I did this before I left the UK) then send practically the same documents to the head office of where you will be based (I sent my application to Gold Coast).
My registration was done before I left but I couldn't go on any supply lists until I had an address in Australia. You have to wait for a letter that says you are allowed to teach then take it upon yourself to visit lots of schools and introduce yourself. I got some supply in the state primary schools but it wasn't very regular so I took a job teaching English to adults. Some people on here have managed to secure contract with primary schools but I decided to apply to all the private schools (GC and Brisbane) that were advertising for Jan 2006.
It was quite disheartening at first as some didn't even reply, others did saying they'd had hundreds of applicants. Eventually I got a couple of interviews and was offered both jobs. Decided to stay on GC and here I am! The school is ok, being private they expect a hell of a lot more from you in terms of evening activities and weekends. I really didn't enjoy it first term but am gradually getting more used to it and doing things how I see fit! (My theory is if it's wrong they'll tell me!).
Good luck with everything. Look on the job websites (careerone, seek) as schools will start advertising for 2007 soon.
Take care, Jo

Hi,
I was worried that it was going to be a bit of a battle. Getting my job here in Bristol was a bit of a nightmare too due to the number of applicants. I think 80+ people applied for my job.
I will def try and get registered before I get out. Do they then send a letter saying I am registered? So then once I have an address I can use that letter and get onto the supply register, is that right? How do you get on the supply list? Do you have to get the equivalent of CRB checked? Do you know who you do that with?
I really don't want to have to give up teaching due to lack of jobs! Do you apply for each job in the same way as you would here in the UK or do the state interview you and then place you somewhere? We are hoping to head to the Sunshine coast but are also thinking of a bit further up as well, maybe as far as Rockhampton. My husband currently works in a quarry as a maintenance fitter so the plan was to get him a job and then I try and get one where we have settled. Looks like it is going to be tough!

Hi,
It may not be as much of a nightmare if you are heading further North. Just seems to be GC,Brisbane,Sunshine Coast as they are popular places to live. The Queensland College of Teachers should send you a card that states provisional registration. Are you coming here soon? If yes, then maybe best to do that when you arrive because the time they take varies and you don't want them to send it to the UK if you are here!
After you have your registration number you have to get an application pack from the local education office where you would prefer to teach (Queensland Education website has them listed and I think from memory has the forms online). Fill them in, marking areas where you want to be considered for supply work and along with certified copies of everything(!!) send it to them. Then they should send you a letter saying you are able to undertake supply work. That's when you can go round schools, contact TRACER etc as they do want to see that letter. Some others on here spoke of interviews but I didn't go through one. I just kept hounding the GC office because they took ages!!
If you still want to teach I wouldn't give up. Just make sure you make yourself known to schools and hound the education department! Also apply to private schools directly after you have your registration. You don't need to be on any supply list with the Council for that. Private schools will also put you on their supply lists, again visit them if you can.
Good luck with it all. If you need anything else feel free to PM me.
