Teaching FE in Aus
Hi, I've just got a job as a part time lecturer at college. It's currently teaching Creative computing to 14-16 yr olds, but am hoping to get trained up next year as a lecturer and teach national diploma graphic design.
I am being realistic and hope to go to oz within 10 years lol.
Was wondering if i was to go via the skilled workers route, would i be classed as a university lecturer? or a teacher?
any advice would be great!
thanks,
jen

To be assessed as a Teacher, you would need a BEd or PGCE. So you could probably be assessed as a University Lecturer, depending on the courses/work experience.
Good luck!

Thanks, I will hopefully study the PGCE next year then. Not much good training up over the next few years for a qualification that won't help me get into oz!

Re: Teaching FE in Aus
I only have a HND in graphics and lots of poxy little qualifications. So am assuming will have to top up to a BA degree?
If the college keeps me next year i've been told that they will train me up, but guess i will probably have to fund the top up myself.

Thanks for the reply. Just wondering about training and long term lecturing myself (my thread about training jobs in Melbourne is on the main page). I wonder would a B.A. be enough to Lecture in Oz or would a masters be needed?

I don't know? Just seen searching through the threads that most teachers need a pgce and 3 years Degree?
But will have teaching experience as well. So hopefully it'll be enough. I'm 21 and got plenty time to train for emmigrating lol. My other alternative is just get a job in repro or graphic design. Done repro before, so shouldn't be too difficult to get back into.
Where abouts do you want to go to in oz?

I would do some serious research about what is acceptable and what is not before you embark on a course of study. Try contacting the relevant state education authorities and finding out what thier requirements are for working as a FE (TAFE) teacher. I know that SA certainly don't recognise the PGCE in FE
Also contact Teachers Australia or whatever they are called now (used to be NOOSR), and see what they suggest.
I think it will be an inevitability that you will need to gain a bachelors degree and a formal teaching qualification. The state requirments here are written in stone, and no amount of teaching practice can overcome them unfortunately. Make sure that you do some very serious research before comitting to anything.
