Default Tax on Wages

Hi to all, I have done a search but can not seem to find an answer to my question. I would like to know how you pay tax on your earnings when in Australia. Do you have a tax code like you do in the UK or do you have to take a copy of your P45 with you? My Husband's tax code has just been changed (due to having access to a company vehicle) for the new tax year from 463L to 222L I just wanted to know if this would affect anything when he starts work in Oz.
Thanks in anticipation for any replies.

You are given a TFN (Tax File Number) by the Tax Office so that you can be identified. The tax is usually taken out of your pay by your employer and you are given a breakdown of the wage/salary and deductions each pay period. For the self employed and businesses which need to calculate GST etc, I don't know, but most ususally use an accountant now.

I have found the PAYG Oz system to be a lot flatter than the UK, especially since they took the highest band tax rate up to $150k. Be prepared for a shock, though, when it comes to company perks like cars etc. Due to a swingeing Fringe Benefit Tax regime, companies shy away from anything that could be construed as payment-in-kind (since they are clobbered by the tax man). You also need to be well versed in the various tax breaks you can claim for your particular profession - or find an accountant who is. It can be worth $$$ when you submit your annual return.
