You request the assessment on a form P85 - check on the Inland Revenue Website.
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/p85_p85s.htm
But if you have income outside PAYE - remember this is usually a year in arrears and you may still be liable after your departure date from the UK.

Re: Tax Returns when emmigrating!!
I downloaded and printed these forms the other day. Very very simple and basic to do but that is worrying me now. You don't have to tell them what you have earnt to date, do a tax return or provide a P45 or anything to prove it.
So do the Inland Revenue (HMRC they call themselves now I think) know this information from your employer when you finish work? God help if that is the way it works, the agency / bureau responsible for my pay screws something up most weeks

just in the process of filling out forms (p85) on very last page section 6
it states in bold letters enclose parts 2 & 3 of p45 and also on the front page they ask for your national insurance number and your pay office tax code, I am assuming from these peices of information they can find out how much money has been paid in taxes etc.
They also ask for a forwarding address /bank details we are leaving one account open in the u.k just incase we get any back.
hope that helps. we leave for oz in 20 days can not wait

Both My husband and myself sent off the forms with our P45 attachments, in the same envelope. I received my rebate 6 weeks ago, we are still waiting for hubbies. He has just written a letter to them.
