When we applied for my daughter's TFN online, it would not let us do it as she was not in the country. When she arrived, the minute we got back from the airport we went online to try again an it went through. As they scan your passport on the way in, they do know if you are here or not. In fact so much so when we went for our citizenship interview, he could tell us exactly the dates we arrived here, when we left on holiday and when we came back. I can't remember if by applying for the TFN online we knew what it was before it officially came or not.

Remember the date you arrive and become tax resident has a bearing on your honeymoon period for such things as bringing sale of house proceeds over and your pension. Just got my bill this week and is over $20K[/QUOTE]


I thought that if you transferred house proceeds after the 'honeymoon period' the only tax you had to pay was on the gain you may have made from exchanging it at a higher rate.
