I'm certainly no expert, but have been in to see my local tax office and told them we were emigrating soon. They have given us Form P85 to complete and return for repayment of tax.

Hope this helps.

You might get some back. Your tax is calculated each month based on a sort of average over the year, even though you will be allowed to earn about 4500 each year tax free. So if you cease to be tax resident in the UK part way through the year, IR re-calculates your actual tax paid against what you should have paid. Depending on how far through the tax year it is when you leave, you could get a tidy sum. I got nearly 900 quid recently

How long are you expected to wait to get your tax back? We sent our forms in before we left the UK (6 July) they have our UK bank account number for the money to go into, not heard a dickie bird.

We sent our forms in after that and got the tax a couple of weeks back. We had to go backwards and forwards with extra info in that time too.

Do they have a mail address for you?

I'm sure I put my mother's address, but she hasn't received anything. Think I will have to ring them up. Another costly phone call

We used my wife's folks (seeing as that's where we'd been staying before we left anyway).

calls to the uk do not need to be costly. lots of cards on the market, we use a g'day card purchased at the post office. (had this one for over a year, top up on the net) check out previous posts, we pay around 2.5c per min plus 22c for the call.
did'nt mean to butt in!
