Hi Sam, glad you got to the beach yesterday and that you were brave enough to have a dip!

Have a look at these two websites with BBQ recipes - i've browsed through them myself before and there's some nice stuff on there....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/mo...qrecipes.shtml

www.barbecue-online.co.uk/bbq_recipes.htm

On the 2nd website there's a vegetable (mediterannean kind) dish that looks lovely - it has fennel in it (not sure if can you get fennel bulbs on the island???), if you like fennel and can get them (i know they can be expensive over here) - i think it's one of the loveliest tasting vegetables i've ever had bbq'd and smells lovely when cooking because of the aniseed flavour...

We always have the same stuff whenever we bbq - but last year because we had virtually no summer we only had a couple of bbq's anyway...
Our kids love corn on the cob bbq'd, and we all love meat/chicken skewer kebabs with peppers/mushrooms/onion etc on them.....and if my parents are joining us we always do big sausages for my Dad - as he loves a good old hot-dog with mustard & ketchup!

Thanks for those ideas and links Cathy, I'll take a look. I make my own burgers and kebabs but getting a bit bored with them now, we've had prawns several times and I make a dip for them, they are scrummy but a bit more expensive so can't have them everytime! Might try some fish next time, we're using it every 3 or 4 days at the moment, I guess the novelty will wear off soon but its fun at the moment.

Hi Sam, no worries, cheaper than buying a cookbook those links! I do have loads of cookbooks though - i like them for the pictures Fingerscrossed i might have more time to use them in Tas.
You need to get yourself a fishing rod and catch something for your barbie!
(presuming whatever you caught would be safe to eat )

Enjoy your warm weather!

Seriously though - she had a lucky escape really, it was lucky she had someone with her to help her to the shore. Bit worrying that they say you should "stay clear of areas with marine creatures" - wouldn't that be most of the sea then???!!!!

Have any of you actually seen any sharks since you've been in Tas ?
errm yep

yes you have to punch em same as you'd punch and kick a croc ... sounds easy doesnt it

not personally but Cols boss has a small plane and flew along bridport coast the other day, said there were about a dozen sharks out at sea ... not whites though

Hi we have had a few BBQ's recently, And on one of them we had a roast pork. That was awesome, Then the next time we had some Fajitas they where superb. Chicked thighs coated in herbs or spices are really good and easy to make. Just find a shop which does herbs and spices in the containers bit like weigh and save. We have a place in Launceston called Grain Grocer.
I got some Cajun spice and paprika mixed it together then just coated the chicken in it. Cooked on BBQ and it was awesome.
Lots of recipie webpages around, One thing wife makes is a spinich dip which is good for a starter or nibble while BBQ is getting ready.

I wonder how many people actually remember that though! Hopefully none of us will ever need to find out if it works!

It's ok if they're right out at sea - i dont mind then! I'd be more scared if they were spotted nearer to the shore! I have swam amongst reef sharks in the Maldives - but was a little uneasy even though they were very small!

Do they do "shark watch" kind of thing in Tas ? - ie, let people know if they've been spotted and if so where?

Hi Possums, you're up and on the computer nice and early today! and there's me sitting here thinking about going to bed! time differences for you eh?
thanks for the link - i'll have a nose on that in the morning...

The Maldives were absolutely lovely ... I spent a week on an Island called Baros - that was after spending a week touring some parts of Sri Lanka. Not much to do in the Maldives apart from relax, snorkel, scuba, visit some other Islands / the main Island /fishing etc but after a busy week in Sri Lanka (another great place if you've never been) it was lovely. I would fully recommend both places to anyone....
I hope one day i'll get to visit the Islands again (before they're lost to the sea with a bit of luck!)

I know the feeling about getting bored easily - i'm the same.... I am already
looking up possible holiday destinations should we not have sold the house by the summer (but have to keep with the positive thoughts that we will ! )

The power of the 80's I could never understand why they filmed a song called Rio off the coast of Sri Lanka! Is a great video though. There was tons to see/do in Sri Lanka - one week just wasn't enough. The tour took in central parts-ie, Sigiriya, Kandy etc, tea plantation, then down to the coast (some parts i saw were later affected by the Tsunami ). The beach resorts were lovely, the people friendly and the food great... We've often talked of going back (Andy has never been) and i'd happily take the kids there. There was Tamil trouble when i went though and parts of Colombo were closed off at that time - but otherwise i felt very comfortable there, especially being on my own.

if you were to do such trips from Tas - where would you most likely fly to?
would it have to be Sydney or Melbourne, then onto somewhere like Singapore? I keep thinking that any future trips are going to involve a lot more flights before you actually get anywhere

Hi everyone ,

i stumbled upon this thread browsing for information about tasmania.
Im a student from Maldives going to UTAS in february and im really nervous about going far away from home and to a place so strange to me . . so wheni came across the first page of this thread i was immeadiately hooked cos i did learn a lot following your posts here lol .iv been reading this the whole day skipping only a few pages and its strange i feel like iv known u all hehhe.. i was hoping i wud find out in the last page that cathy had also made the move to tas

anyway i just cudnt resist writing on this when the topic turned to maldives , where i am from !! as cathy had said it rreally is nice and unlike most other places its even more beautiful than the brochures and postcards u have seen. ( sorry if i sound i bit braggy but im appreciating my home after having lived away from it for a few years lol )

Its true there isnt much adventure here compared to sri lanka but they also like market the place as somewhwere u can come and do nothing . there are some beautiful islands in the nothern and southern atolls which are not really promoted as tourist destinations .. but these places are traditonal and interesting .. u just need a good local guide.

i am to stay is Tas for one year and i have a million worries .. i dont know how i ll deal with the cold . iv never exprienced wheather below 27 or 28. Here in maldives its all flat land and there isnt so much as a hill . there are no animals here except cats and we rarely see an insect like a spider. so tasmania is going to be a very strange world for me i guess
