Mum's Brisbane house sold in 3 days! It settled last Wednesday. Yes everyone told her she'd freeze to death in Tassie, but she hasn't yet.

3 days! That is so quick. Makes you wonder why English law is so longwinded....i dont think any sale could complete that quickly over here!
I imagine people did warn your Mum about the weather.....when i've talked about Tas before to people they've made a comment about it "being cold" :blink: I guess in some respects it's probably nice for her to escape the humidity and continuous heat - i know people acclimatise but it must get you down at times when temperatures are so high. I know i'd be relieved! But saying that - it's been raining continuously over here all morning....so a bit of sun wouldnt go amiss right now! :D

the sale from listing to a contract was 3 days, the settlement (legals) takes 30 days but still a very fast result!!

I did wonder if you meant just the initial part of the sale taking 3 days! :D
Seems more realistic now - but even so - still faster than the UK! :thumbup:

Hiya,

Just saw this thread and thought I'd duck in to say I"m a Tasmanian born and bred .. spent the first 17 years of life there and shot off the mebourne as soon as possible.

Plusses - It's the most beautiful place in the world, and its ideal at either end of one's life - safe for small kids and relaxing for older adults

Negatives - kids in late teens will be bored, especially if they're from england!

I'd be happy for anyone to pm me if they're heading to Hobart especially... :D

Sorry I've not been able to post for a while, dont seem to find the time at the moment. We are arriving in Hobart on 16th June, so its been like a mad house here. We are having our leaving party this Saturday, which I'm a bit anxious about, I dont want to end up crying all night - about sad goodbyes !:o

HI & welcome to Melbournecity Rach - :Dso you could'nt wait to leave Tas ? what is it that Melbourne has got that Tas has'nt then ? I have 3 kids so its something that interests me - not that I'm too worried about it. Have you been there long ?

I am trying to research primary schools around the Hobart area, my OH is going for a job interview at Rosny park, so around that area. Does anyone know what schools have a good reputation ? I vaguley remember someone saying that Taroona Primary was the best school ? I know its further away, but schools are our main priority. Any help or advice would be brilliant :thumbup:

I have heard your comment about kids being bored in their late teens before from other people....but i guess it depends on what your kids are into and whether they're busy enough to keep them amused! I wont worry about that yet though - have quite a few years to go yet before my two reach their teens! :lol:
We will be heading for the Hobart area's ourselves eventually (when the house sells) - whereabouts did you live ?

Not yet in Tas, so don't know about schools from any first hand expereince but we know a couple who bought a house in Tas last year and they have managed to find out a few bits for us.
Taroona and Kingston High School came out well recommended, our children will be in Primary School, Grades 4 & 6, so contacted some of them, most have quite strict catchment area rules, particularly in the Taroona and Kingston areas due to the population growth of those areas, so Rosny Park would be no good to live if thats where you wanted the children to go and they still have the catchment rules. Although I have only contacted the Primary Schools so far, High Schools may be more relaxed on the catchment boundaries?

I marked on a map all the places we like the look of and then contacted all of the schools, they have all been really helpful, but until we know where we'll find a suitable rental property, we obviously can't make any real plans.

As I said, we are not there yet, so hopefully, someone else might pop up with more info.

Good luck for your leaving party.....I'm sure you will enjoy it - and i hope it's really great having all your loved ones/friends etc there - and that it doesnt become too upsetting at the end of the night :(
I must admit that is one of the things i worry about come the time when we finally leave. I reckon i'd be getting through a box of tissues at the end of the night...or just getting drunk to get through it! I've already told my closest friends that we're to pretend it's a birthday party or something! :D Dont think i'd risk wearing mascara of any description that night though! :lol: I'm just going to keep saying to myself and the people i really care about that it's not goodbye forever...:unsure:

I hope you manage to find out the info you want about schools... We're still undecided on an exact location - and i want to be able to walk my daughter to school when she starts next year - so i wont be looking too much into schools until we actually arrive and decide on an exact area.... But i'd be interested to hear if you find out about any particular schools that get a really good write up. I have heard the same thing about Taroona Primary before myself...

Anyway, i hope all your final arrangements go smoothly - and take care of yourselves.... I look forward to hearing any updates you have!

Hi guys, have been following the threads sliently for a while now, saw this one and thought I could help out. You have to live in the catchment area to enable your child to go to school in Tasmania. If your hubbie is looking at a job in Rosny Park and you want to live in surrounding areas, I can highly recommend Lindisfarne where we were for 6 months, its such a beautiful area. There are two schools in this are, Lindisfarne Primary School and Lindisfarne North, my kids went to Lindisfarne Primary School and I can highly recommend this. Hope this helps.

I grew up in around Rosny Park / Bellerive! School's wise - Bellerive primary is good and I agree with Lindesfarne as well.

As far as catchment fir high schools ... there are two 'single sex' schools in Hobart one for boys one for girls, that are state schools that model themselves on private schools - great results, blazers and boater hats etc. These do not have catchment rules, you an attend from anywhere. Ogilvie, the girls one, is especially good, and is probably the best school you could send girls to without going private.

Tassie is okay - just very small, and tends not to get the entertainment the 'mainland' does - so for example, no bands tour there, no underage social events, only a couple of cinemas and a bowling alley for things to do. But, it does tend to make teenagers more outdoorsy I guess - we used to have to go camping etc to find fun!

Well they do say Tasmania's greatest export is it's youth - but then they all come back to raise children and settle down. A generalisation I know, but I do fully expect my kids to head to Melbourne when they reach that age, I also expected it when I lived in Perth, but Tassie is a lot closer to Melbourne than Perth is. I actually wouldn't mind retiring to country Victoria later in life :eek: there I've said it!! Whether Hubby would go is another thing though. But yes I am missing the retail therapy :blink:

Rosny has a great shopping centre called Eastlands, everything you could want under one roof, it's great! :thumbsup: But it could do with an H&M, I miss that shop :(.
