Hi just wanted to get an opinon about taking your furniture and paying for the shipping and waiting for the furniture to finally arrive probably weeks after you have, or to start afresh in your new place downunder, surely cant be a lot more moneywise and you have new stuff, thanks

Regularly debated.

Personally, we are taking everything. Have vaguely costed it all, bearing in mind age etc and for us it's worth spending 3 grand shipping it over. Everyone is different.

Hi there,

Heres my 2ps worth...

Think about how much it would cost to replace everything. Is it worth more/less than the average £3000 shipping quote?

We have been advised (by family already out there) to bring everything...

Its your choice though..

Good luck,
Karen

WE are in the middle of the waiting period right now! We paid approx. 5,500 pounds to bring over all of our possessions - we have some lovely furniture and decided that we may not be able to replace it or that it may cost a lot to replace it here. I have to admit that it is a bit of a nightmare being here without our 'stuff' but we are coping fine. Had people over for dinner last night and our dining table was a camping table - but it did the job!

I think it all depends on the furniture you have, there's no point in shipping a load of rubbish to Oz for £3,000 but if you have some nice pieces and heirlooms that a very precious / valuable then take all of them plus a load of other stuff that you can chuck away if you end up not using it.
We aren't taking any large items as we can send 15 large tea chests for around £500 which will contain all of our individual personal stuff and a few essentials.
For us the idea of filling our new Oz home with the same stuff we had in the U.K is a bit of a turn off and it seems much more exciting and fun to have a totally clear canvas.

Each to their own on this one !!!

Cheers

Dave

Always a well debated question. If you go to the John Mason website, you can get an online quote for shipping your belongings, by going through a virtual house and selecting the items to ship over. At the end, you get a costing for shipment and a replacement cost. Quite an eye opener.

We sold up everything in the UK when we came here to NZ in NOv 04, as most of our furniture was secondhand anyway. Now that we have decided that we are not staying here, we are DEFINATELY shipping our stuff to OZ as we have bought brand new here.
Think it depends on what you have. We would lose a great deal of money if we sold our stuff off now, plus the hassle of it!! I really loved starting a fresh here though, but wouldn't want to do it again!!

We only shipped some of ours, sold the rest to friends and at bootsales. I wish we had bought the lot, and then if it was needed, then sell on at a garage sale.
The houses are that much bigger here, and it will cost a small fortune to replace the whole house. We shipped some, and have bought quite a bit.......but still have 2 empty rooms!!!
