Speaking as someone who has used the NHS on a number of occasions, I think it is an excellent institution that provides very good service most of the time. :)
However, the government's move towards PFIs is gutting NHS hospitals and costing the taxpayer obscene amounts in added fees - most of which go straight into the pockets of private corporations! In other words, the NHS is being rapidly privatised by stealth. What can we expect from this? A drop in the quality of service, and a corresponding rise in the associated costs. :( George Monbiot's Guardian article says it all: Last week, after spending £14m on lawyers, consultants, architects and miscellaneous money-wasting schemes, the NHS ditched its plans for a massive hospital in west London. The projected cost of the Paddington health campus had risen from £360m to £1.1bn, while the number of beds had fallen from 1,000 to 800. This is pretty normal for a PFI scheme; in one case I've studied, beds fell by 20%, while costs rose by 1,100%. What makes this case unusual is that the project was dropped before the money was spent. Roll on Cairns Stu |

Re: T.V. Programme on Nurses movin to Aus
dont get me wrong i myself and many of my friends and family members have had excellent treatment in NHS hospitals and, considering it is completely free of charge, have had nothing to grumble about but when faced with moving to australia or unemployment....australia wins hands down!
i didnt even see then programme as i was on a late shift as a bank HCA tryin to save up for the big move but according to the people who did see it, if anything, it has encouraged more nurses to migrate. |
Re: T.V. Programme on Nurses movin to Aus
My wife and I moved over here over 2 years ago and have worked in the public health service from day one.
The hospital are modern and well equipped but the management and the mentality of the majority of the staff is something from the pre Thatcher days in the UK. Its very unionised where I work and also very budget orientated. Yes nurses are well looked after and the salaries are becoming better - but at what cost? :( There are good aspects of both countries systems. But given a choice I would work for the NHS. The life out here is much better than we had in the UK - Pool, private schools for the kids, beautiful beach near by- and we accept to work in an outdated system for the life style it brings. |
