I'd love to watch that programme!!
I work at The Prince Charles in Brisbane. Absolutely fantastic! They really care for their staff. Not only am I on a much better salary, I have been paid a bonus for my degree, ENB 100 and my ICU course which amounts to quite a substantial amount and they do salary sacrifice, another bonus. It is such a shame that the British Government dont give a hoot about the NHS as its the patients who will suffer. There are now 160 UK nurses going to Cairns and 128 coming to the Prince Charles. :( Kim |

I work in the private and public sector here in Bris and boy some of the medicine bills the old folks have to contend with can run into hundreds of dollars a month, such as some analgesic patches can be $185 a fortnight. However, hospitals do look after nurses better here. Rich |

Couldnt help but reply to this thread, I've been in Melbourne for the last 7 months working for the Royal District Nursing Service, a great Employer no doubt: supportive, professional and all the things that you'd want from an employer, BUT nursing here is so different from the UK, those on pensions have to make a contribution to their visits, minimal yes but a contribution none the less and when the pension isn't any better than in the UK it goes against the grain that some little old lady/man struggles because the district nurses have to go in 2 or 3 times a week.
They also have to pay for dressings here in Victoria, though i believe they are subsides by the local government in other states. Prices of dressings are unbelievable, the comapanies seem to have a monopoly and charge silly prices. Imagine having to have 4 layer dressings on a leg ulcer, the cost is something like $50, and of course you need at least 2 or 3 for changes etc, They actually wash bandages !!!! i havent seen that in the uk for probably 15 years!! you also have to buy gause swabs and dressing packs. Equipment has to be bought or hired, its not lent or borrowed, how do you find the money to hire equipment when your paying for dresssings, nursing visits AND prescriptions? Theres definantly a two tierd system, yes i know that happens in the UK to, but in the same ward? in the same nursing home ? Sorry but I will NEVER complain about the NHS again, and I'm thankful my parents/family in the UK have the NSH to lean, it's far from ideal i know, but its a damn site better than some of the options. Is it though? I've been to hospital in both UK and Australia and found the standard of care, facilities etc to be about the same ie good.
I have nursed in both UK and Australian hospitals and I think far more is expected of the NHS nurse, I felt lucky some shifts in the Uk that a major error or disaster hadn't occurred, I have never felt like this in Oz. This is my personal opinion and experiences maybe others have experienced differently and like I said the NHS is an asset to the UK but I really do feel it is in a mess. :( |

Not long after I qualified in the early 1970's lots of Nurses left the UK for Canada.
The Canadians ran a big recruitment drive at the time and exactly the same things were being said then...over 30 years ago. G |

Re: T.V. Programme on Nurses movin to Aus
i hate to be complaining in my first ever post but i find myself one of many third year nursing student coming into my last term of training with no hope of getting a job at the end of it. my husband is an australian nurse whom i met whilst he was over here travelling and we are now planning on going over to melbourne in feb 08. i would welcome the chance to work for a few years here in england before emigrating but i face the problem of finishing three years of training and either going into another area of work or being unemployed......who can blame me for wanting to go abroad???

Re: T.V. Programme on Nurses movin to Aus
Speaking as someone who has used the NHS on a number of occasions, I think it is an excellent institution that provides very good service most of the time. :)
However, the government's move towards PFIs is gutting NHS hospitals and costing the taxpayer obscene amounts in added fees - most of which go straight into the pockets of private corporations! In other words, the NHS is being rapidly privatised by stealth. What can we expect from this? A drop in the quality of service, and a corresponding rise in the associated costs. :( George Monbiot's Guardian article says it all: Last week, after spending £14m on lawyers, consultants, architects and miscellaneous money-wasting schemes, the NHS ditched its plans for a massive hospital in west London. The projected cost of the Paddington health campus had risen from £360m to £1.1bn, while the number of beds had fallen from 1,000 to 800. This is pretty normal for a PFI scheme; in one case I've studied, beds fell by 20%, while costs rose by 1,100%. What makes this case unusual is that the project was dropped before the money was spent. |
