Hi Deb,
Its on Thursday 7pm BBC 1, Real Story with Fiona Bruce. The write up says " investigations why hundreds of British nurses are emigrating to Aus and how this could cause major problems to the NHS in future years." hhmmm, might have known it would be our fault that the NHS is declining!

Hi i am hoping to move out to Queensland in June 2008 around the Brisbane area. So i am really looking forward to this programme, hopefully it will give us an insite into what we are letting ourselves in for. It can't be any worse than nursing in this country:curse: Deb

I have set the tv to record. it will make interesting watching as i am doing my training at the moment, but it is so we can use it to go to Perth. my other half is an engineer, but we think it will be easier on my visa.I know what you mean by the agenda for change, i was an auxiliary for 21 years and lost out big style to colleagues who had only been auxiliaries for only 4 years. they are now been paid more than me because they were owed increments from the old payscale. so stuff the NHS it no wonder people are leaving

I spent a night in The Royal Perth last year and a lot of the Nurses were British. I spoke to a few of them and they said it was very similar to the NHS, although there were less opportunities for Nurses to progress. Nice hospital though, very similar to an NHS hospital ie good.

Couldnt help but reply to this thread, I've been in Melbourne for the last 7 months working for the Royal District Nursing Service, a great Employer no doubt: supportive, professional and all the things that you'd want from an employer, BUT nursing here is so different from the UK, those on pensions have to make a contribution to their visits, minimal yes but a contribution none the less and when the pension isn't any better than in the UK it goes against the grain that some little old lady/man struggles because the district nurses have to go in 2 or 3 times a week.
They also have to pay for dressings here in Victoria, though i believe they are subsides by the local government in other states. Prices of dressings are unbelievable, the comapanies seem to have a monopoly and charge silly prices. Imagine having to have 4 layer dressings on a leg ulcer, the cost is something like $50, and of course you need at least 2 or 3 for changes etc, They actually wash bandages !!!! i havent seen that in the uk for probably 15 years!! you also have to buy gause swabs and dressing packs.
Equipment has to be bought or hired, its not lent or borrowed, how do you find the money to hire equipment when your paying for dresssings, nursing visits AND prescriptions?
Theres definantly a two tierd system, yes i know that happens in the UK to, but in the same ward? in the same nursing home ?
Sorry but I will NEVER complain about the NHS again, and I'm thankful my parents/family in the UK have the NSH to lean, it's far from ideal i know, but its a damn site better than some of the options.

i qualified last jan and i was told at my interview that there would be no progression and i would never get beyond a band 5..... i still took the job as there were no other. the band 6's in my department are now being down banded to a 5 and the 7's are being halved and they are going to a six... i work in theatres and they put on more and more lists we work later and later for less money, support, respect.... it may be similar in OZ but i cant see it being worse and at least the sun will be shining.....

there are extra beds on the wards and throughput is faster than ever with the same staffing levels but more acute patients coming out of ITU sooner.
BUT don't like the idea that in Oz that you are screwing the old folks either.

Too true, clinical specialist posts lose funding after 6 months so back to band 5!! ward managers are a 7 junior sisters a 6 here. District nurses dont exist any more teams led by band 5 nurses and 7s made up to community matron with training or eventually to down grading. community matrons have overall responsibility for their own case load AND two or 3 community teams!!

I work at The Prince Charles in Brisbane. Absolutely fantastic! They really care for their staff. Not only am I on a much better salary, I have been paid a bonus for my degree, ENB 100 and my ICU course which amounts to quite a substantial amount and they do salary sacrifice, another bonus.
It is such a shame that the British Government dont give a hoot about the NHS as its the patients who will suffer. There are now 160 UK nurses going to Cairns and 128 coming to the Prince Charles.
