$900 per week will see you with a plethora of choice, on both sides of the bridge. It really comes down to lifestyle and what you're after- night life, family areas, shopping districts, quieter suburban areas, semi-rural lifestyle, waterfront etc etc.... let us know.

$900K to buy will also get you a lot or very little, again depending on what you're after.

Life's much better in the south!
If you live closer to Sutherland or Jannali if is even easier to get to the CBD you get trains every 15 minutes 5am to 1am daily, more in rush hour (as you get the choice of Waterfall or Cronulla services). And Sutherland also gets the superfast Wollongong services.

I get the 8.07 from Jannali (plenty of free onstreet parking in the area although for me it is more lazyitis as I could walk there) which comfortably gets me into work in the CBD before 9 and that includes the queue for the coffee once I've got off the train. And at $36 a week for trains that are pretty well always on time I think it is a bargain.

Houses in our area rent for around $500 to $600 (4 bed, 2 bath, 2 parking) and start at around $600k to buy (or $1m+ for deep waterfront)

We live about the same distance from Sydney as we did from London but swapped our 2 bed Essex terrance for a 4 bed/2 bath detached with bush views and an inground spa for the same price and travel time plus less travel cost.

Cronulla is a slightly smaller quieter version of Manly but a lot cheaper

The Shire...... Well it really depends on the kind of person you are and the life you intend to live. If you intend to have a social life beyond BBQ's then the shire may not be for you. Inner west / eastern suburbs have a good vibe are close to city, beaches, boutique shops and do not suffer from a small town reactonary mentality that some outer Sydney suburbs do.

Id definitely recommend Balmain. Its only a stone's throw from the city and there are plenty of bars etc to keep you entertained.

Definitely agree for singles/childless couples Balmain is hard to beat, for those with kids I would suggest somewhere like the Shire with lots of wildlife and outdoor activities but not to much traffic pollution.
