I will be moving to Sydney sometime this month. What suburbs are not recommended?
I have done some research but I was wondering if things have changed, like if new suburbs have gained some notoriety.
Thanks.

I don't think any are particulary dangerous as long as you don't join a bikie gang or middle eastern drug syndicate. Like anywhere best to avoid welfare suburbs and I couldn't even tell you which they are. As a general rule I don't go into western sydney but that's because I'm a snob.

I think the only suburbs that I hear mentioned as general no go areas are Minto and Macquarie Park - but they are so far out in the boonies, I really can't see why anybody would even consider going there.
Even Redfern has gentrified significantly these days, and is more about hipsters and coffee than anything else. The houses there are now getting snapped up, as the gentrification has made its proximity to the city very desirable.
My general rule is nothing west of Strathfield, as that is where you start to get the vast tracts of McMansions with no community or soul.
I'm with Beoz on the suburb snob front...

I really don't think Australia has many any no-go areas.

I've never felt unsafe anywhere in Sydney, or anywhere in Australia. Its much less threatening than London.
I'm taking about people obviously. Its the snakes, spiders and other beasties you have to watch out for here.

For example. If I walk west along the Kings Road in Chelsea I can rub shoulders with the filthy rich then end up in the Worlds End (appropriately named) Estate.

On my last trip over I was flipping through the in-flight mag and there was a section on Sydney, and in it one of the recommended bars to visit was a certain place in - I quote - "trendy Redfern."
