Really depends what you're after. Beach, hills, near city, outer suburbs. Do you want to be able to walk places or happy to drive? Are you looking for a bargain or do you have money to spend?
Your "best" suburb might not be like someone else's, so give us a few details about yourself and your situation, and you're bound to get some replies

Anywhere on the southern beaches, Glenelg, Brighton etc, all the way up to Seaford which is around 40 mins from city by car.

7 miles = 11km. That's very close to the city. The question is, why would you want to be that close to the city?

And depending on time of day that little 11 kms can take same time as it takes me to drive 45 km into town! Couldn't believe how bad it is on a Friday early evening! I'm soooo spoilt!

We are in Nailsworth which is close to the CBD. Big houses on big blocks. One of those areas which is being rediscovered. Next to the affluent suburbs... no plane noise unlike North Adelaide (the suburb) where we used to live, 5 mins in the car to the CBD. On the bus route to CBD. We can walk to the post office, plus 3 supermarkets - Coles, Woolies and Foodland plus a large Target.
I think this is the sort of area the op is after. We found it by chance and are the only poms we know here. Only downside is that the local primary isn't supposed to be great.
