Question Stopovers - Good idea?

We are travelling out next year and I (being very bored at work) have started looking at ideas regarding flights.
Would anyone reccomend doing a stopover? I have been thinking of the Thailand.

It's just the two of us in a late twenties so no kids to worry about. Though the idea of lugging all our luggage around does slightly put me off the idea!

Stopover is the most sensible idea if you can manage it. Thailand (Bangcock) not too good as you need to get out of the city to have a relaxing time although I love Bangcock.

Hong Kong is great lots to do and see and buy and shuttle buses from the airport to most hotels save the lugging bags problem Also Singapore is good cheap taxis also save the luggage problem we have tried all these and also gone the USA way but would NEVER do the journey straight though as you lose a couple lor more days at the other end for jet lag and bad temper. Good journeying ...

Hi Wilso,

We stopped in Singapore for 3 days. Cheap taxi into city (which is beautiful) and we stayed in a top hotel for £125.00 (both of us for 2 nights). Had a great time, would recommend it.

We had a stopover (only one night) in Kuala Lumpur which was a real relief after a long flight. We put the luggage on at Heathrow and it flew straight to Brisbane, all we took off at KL was hand luggage (change of clothes etc). C x

We just had four days in Hong Kong, which was fantastic and broke up the trip nicely.
It meant that we could chill out for a few days after the sheer panic of moving out of the UK before the panic of arriving in Oz, and lessening the pain of the flights.
Oh, and to rival Bangcock, if you're in Hong Kong, check out the jewellery chain called "Fok Ming Tong" (!)

Always seemed silly to me to go half way around the world and only look down on it.Air NZ had a good flight London/LA/choice of Hawaii,Cook islands or Tahiti/Auckland then oz.Tahiti is very expensive.I don't know if they still have it but it is a good holiday and you may never get the chance to see those places again .Asia is virtually on the doorstep so holidays there can be inexpensive from here.China airlines did a good flight from Amsterdam/New York/ Anchorage/Tokyo/Taipei/BKK then OZ,again you may never see any of those places so this could be your only chance.Try flying through Vancouver (nice place) and using Japan as a gateway to asia/oz.Airports usually have luggage storage so leave bags there.Go for it!

The first time we went to Oz we stayed over in Bali for 4 days, which was nice. Last time we went straight through there and back. There was just the two of us last time so it was fine but we have a 2 year old now and are planning on going out next October, not sure if we will go straight through or have a couple of days in Singapore or somewhere.

If anyone is planning to book all luggage through to final destination, and only take hand luggage or one small suitcase at stopover, be careful. We were told by Singapore Airlines (during the same phone call that we booked the tickets) that we could do so but when we checked in at Heathrow with our million cases, travel cot, car seat, stroller etc etc, we were told we couldn't as our stopover was longer than 48 hours. Apparently they have a maximum 48 hour policy. Fortunately Changi Airport has excellent left luggage facilities but not sure other airports would have such good facilities. And it was still a struggle getting all the luggage from the baggage reclaim to the left luggage facility... and it cost us. Would make sure it was in writing next time.
