Gosh, the apartments sound terrible, how awful, could you not ask for a refund? 
Surprised to hear about people in Brisbane being unfreindly, we have been here over 3 years and we have only encountered 1 person that was rude. In our opinion and people that have stayed with us, on the whole find the australian customer service very good, so very surprised to hear differently.

We stayed at these apartments in March and April of this year and found them to be good. We got ants in our apartment a few days in and told the management about them, they then came in and got rid of them and we didnt see the ants again for the rest of our stay. They did tell us that the ants were quite often a problem on the lower floor apartments which we were. They were always more then helpful when ever we had any enquiries.
As for ppl not being friendly here, I dont agree most ppl we have met have been fine, and have been very helpful to us.
